Howdy- I just got a tractor grader blade at a metal recycler that is 16' x 3.5" x 1/4" for $16.00 (as I was leaving the guy said he goofed and charged too little)- I asked for high carbon and this is what they had. I'm new at this
and haven't found any references to grader blades as knife stock, but it seemed like a good deal. Anyone know anything about grader blade steel? I would like to know just what it is I've got- It's supposed to be extremely tough and able to take extreme abuse- and it's hard to cut even after annealing- darn near ate up a 7" abrasive cutoff blade on my circular saw and only got 3" through (not annealed properly?) maybe some kind of spring steel? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Chris

Some sort of spring steel would make sense, if you got your hands on a chunk of 52100 that size for 16 bucks you got a hell of a deal. It makes an awesome knife.

There might be more info on this in the shoptalk forum, alot of guys over there forge and recycle stuff.

Your best info will come from testing peices of it. Cut off a peice about the same size as bar stock for a knife, anneal it, then heat it til non magnetic and quench it in a light oil. See how easy it snaps half, and what the grain structure looks like.
