Grades of blade metal?

Are there any sites that can layout, catagorize, or list the metal quality?

As I get more into knives and read the different metal grade they use for each knife, it really just does not mean anything to me. Its kind of frustrating for me as I like to at least have a general idea which is better. More frustrating b/c I cannot find any sites to help me understand or at least give me some direction.

Preferred steels for a knife depend on what the knife is intended to do.

How those steels are treated in the manufactiring process and the design of the knife are probably more important than what steel was selected. Putting it another way, about any steel can be made into a good knife or a poor knife.

You can attempt to develop some expertise on steel to attempt to evaluate the material choices of the various makers or attempt to develop some knowledge of the makers to see who you believe can be trusted to make good choices.
 
Cool...thanks guys. At this point I don't believe myself to gain enough knowledge to have much of an expertise on the matter, just looking for enough to be dangerous I guess. :)

Though I do understand job function is directly related to the metal compound needed to fulfill its intended purpose. Hopefully I can gain absorb enough info to help make a better decision on what will work best for me.
