I have been researching and observing for awhile related to custom knives. As with experience and exposure in most things, we develop an "eye" for what is visually and physically appealing to us. And also as we use tools of any trade, we develop a preference for certain types based on our uses of the tools...

As I read on this forum and have been slowly building a base of knowledge about who makes what, (which is almost nothing) ... certain makers work continued to stand out to me. Maybe "someday I could get on of those" type of thinking....

As my son turns 18 shortly and recently graduated from high school, I began to start the process of selling my wife on the idea that since this is a once in a lifetime event, it deserves a very special gift. And that as has he has grown into a man I am very proud of, I felt we should get him something that he can treasure now, and possibly long after I am gone... Something we can use together and enjoy together. We enjoy hiking, arrowhead hunting, woodcraft, hunting, etc together... And quality knives make all those things more fun...

Once I had contacted Kyle after seeing some of his work here on BF, I asked if he would make a knife for us. When he said he could, we started the journey to get the design right for what I had in mind. Kyle was such a pleasure to work with. I have been a business owner my entire adult life and I understand a little of what good customer relations and communication looks like. And as I started getting more excited about what Kyle was developing, I finally asked for another! One I can enjoy and possibly hand down to my younger son when he is ready....

These 2 knives will have a special place in our family, and I thank Kyle Hanson for the opportunity to own some of his work. I hope to order more someday...

I will include pics for others to appreciate...

To my son... Congratulations, and I am proud of you!

Great looking knives, very good choice in the maker.

I'm sure your son will enjoy it for a life time.

Beautiful knives and photos! I assume W2 steel, but the handles, are they mammoth bark?

Nice patterns, and I gotta say, the KH utility that I have has one of the SHARPEST edges ever provided by a custom maker.

Best Regards,

A wonderful, thoughtful gift that will grow in meaning over the years. Very nice design and excellent craftsmanship. I particularly like hamon and bolster treatments.

I got to watch Kyle make these. He did very well! & with very little input from me. I'm proud of him!

Thank you Brian for posting this and working with Kyle.

The bark is mammoth. The steel on one is W 2 and the other is Hanson Damascus. The bolsters on both are Damascus which I think sets off the handles on both very well... They are VERY sharp... Both in looks and edge. I had a little nervousness about how the handles would feel and fit. I love Bark River handles and had some of that influence in mind. These feel awesome and I LOVE the tapered tang in the handles... It's the first tapered tang I have owned.

Not only are the knives beautiful - but what a great story that goes along with them - presenting a gift of tradition and heirloom quality from a knife maker whose skills are also part of a tradition and family legacy. Congratulations to your son on his graduation and to Kyle for some beautiful work. -Karen

The best thing about knives, IMHO, are the stories that go along with them. That's sure the case here. Very cool, especially the father and son connection (buyer) coupled alongside the father and son connection (maker).

Lotsa people research the heck out of a subject and still don't get it right, but you sure did. Can't beat a Hanson knife, period.

Don, your are welcome. Thanks for taking the time to talk at Blade Show this year. Hope to visit again sometimes... Maybe next year...

Congratulations on all counts....a beautiful pair for the occasion!

Nice story and knives. Well done by both guys.
Lord willing, I'll have one of his blades headed my way soon.
Gotta pick up,a few more cans. :-)
