Something amazing happened to me on Wednesday.
Out of sheer boredom I was typing random traditional knife patterns into Google, and six results down was a link to Amazon.

Thinking this a little odd, I clicked through to the link where seller who had 'Just Launched' was privately selling an item.
I didn't even know you could do that, but I didn't question that fact for long.

There was just one photo for what I saw, and the briefest of descriptions, but before I knew it, and £80 later, I had ordered myself, what I consider to be my grail knife.

They don't appear very often....infact they seem rarer then Unicorn poo!

I wasn't expecting it until next week, but my heart almost jumped outta my chest when a package was handed to me 30 minutes ago!

It was here....

....my barrel knife :excitement:

Pleased as punch and darn glad I brought my old digital camera to work so I could show you guys!!

I'll leave you with the seller's description for now....I need to paw over it for a while....

"Swedish made knife by Joh Engstrom with a 100 mm blade Unique design in metal capped wood case Inscribed date 1874 Condition - Good +"

Oh, man-- congratulations!

So, those are your pictures above? (I'm a little confused about the timeline.)

Great story.

Really cool knife. :)

Now, that is a truly interesting piece. I like it a lot. It's in good condition considering its age. Thanks for posting the photos; otherwise, I might not have even realized such a knife was ever offered.

Thanks gents.

Yes, sorry, I didn't mean to confuse. I was just a little giddy.
These are photo's I took today.

The macro on this camera is not so hot, so hopefully I can take some better ones tomorrow.

There is a small ding/chip in the blade, half an inch up from the choil.
It would be too much metal to remove, so it will stay, but it should by no means affect the usability of the knife....

....and oh yes, it will be used!

This is a rare opportunity when you come across your grail knife and get it. Congrats it is really unique and hard to come by.

Congratulations on finding your grail knife...they really are cool.

My grandfather left me a box of knives and it contained a smaller (just over 3" closed) Jernbolaget Eskilstuna Sweden Barrel knife.

Very cool piece of old skool ingenuity there!
Hats off to a great scrore!

Yes... that´s a Classic, for sure. They are great knives. My grandpa told me once, that they were relatively common in Germany in the past. But somehow nobody got interessted in the design for further production. On the german knifeforum there was a pretty large thread about these swedish made knives some years ago.

And yours seems to be in great condition! Lucky man :)

Thanks for all your comments gents.

I'm gonna have to have a long hard think about how much to 'restore' this before putting it back in action.

Andi, I don't know why these just stop being made. They are such a smart design and really, all the parts seem easily manufacturable.

I had always thought I'd end up having to look one of few makers specializing in these. Often though I've found they are using materials that are a bit more flashy than my simple tastes, and that i feel this humble design suits.

That is really a neat idea, congrats on your grail.

Stan

You lucky,lucky....;)
fully functional and some nice wood there, they show up from time to time on EB but something always missing(lock pin usually),
there are some custom makers who build barrel knives, but price is way out of my reach.
