I had a paper with specs for refining the grain in 1080 carbon steel after forging, but i can't fond it now. I tried the search but it didn't seem to be working. Can anyone give me the temps and process of refining the grain in 1080 carbon steel? If i remember right it was something like heat to just non-magnetic, soak a couple minutes at that temp ( i think around 1400 degrees farenheight), and let cool in still air 3 times, but i am not sure of the temp to aim for, i think around 1400 degrees farenheight. Does that sound right? I also seem to remember that i could also do about the same by heating to that temp or just magnetic and soak for a couple minutes and then quench in oil a couple times.

The process is called normalization. It involves heating above Ac3 (critical temperature for the eutectoid ) about 50-100 degrees.Hold for a few minutes to ensure full heating and cool in air (you can quench it after a 5-10 minutes).Repeat two or three more times. This creates fine pearlite. It refines the grain to its best state.Avoid overheating the steel,or overlong soaking. For 1080 this is about 1400 degrees.
