grain structures- sorry boring question

I have very little understanding of the structures created in steel during heat treating. I know that we have different stages of grain growth (pearlite martensite etc.) but I'm not really sure what that means or how it affects a blade, especially with differential heat treatment. I find references to this all over the forum but most of it is already over my head. Is there anyone who has a basic tutorial or something like that? Possibly something with pictures? I have a hard time keeping it all straight and it seems like if I had some images to go along with the words it would probably all snap right into place for me.

Thanks again for all your help

WHAT! How could grain conditions and steel microstructures be boring? I find them as exciting as a Jenna Jameson flick, or at least spend more time looking at them. Oh gosh, I really am pathetic, aint I?:( I can't remember the last book I curled up with that wasn't published by ASM:( . If I wasn't married I would never get a date:confused:

Thanks a lot for the help guys. I've only glanced over the pdf but I'll print it out later. Kevin your article was great. I'm going to print that one as well. I've read it but I'm going to have to go through it a couple more times just to make it all stick. All those "-ites" get muddled up on my brain to easy!

Thanks again,
Jeramy

Kevin is correct in his enthusiasm. Do as suggested above but in the mean time a bit of the horse sense dad left you might help ease the pressure some. There will be no immediate, or abrubt, deviation at line seperating pearlite and martensite. There will be a mediation of seperation. So, it will not be like going immediately from one region to another but rather an integration at the bounderary.

Heat treating is wonderful to say the least and probably still my most favorite part of knife making. All that taste it seem wondered by it and I, for one, think it the chocolate nuget at the bottom of the ice cream cone. It is the single most thing that makes me want to grind a blade. Get hooked and know that it is like reaching for the stars. You'll grab a star, finally, but not in this life time. HT is both wonderful and wonderous and always a goal to better acheive.
