Grande Fathers Mini hatchet.

So, I wanted to see if this little hatchet would be more usful than the BK7 for the things inbetween an axe and small knfie (making fires, procuring supplies for shelter) it weights alittle less, but the weight is behind the edge. I thought it may work well, and in fact it didn't do to bad.

Now, I've become very fond of my BK7, as I think its a great thing to have when you just want a little more than a small knife, but not as much as a large axe. I've split many rounsd of wood, also chopping is not a problem as it has sufficent weight, and a nice thing edge that bits right in, but it also has just that, wight. After digging out my mini hatchet that I got from my grand father, I wanted to see if it would preform any better than the BK7. As it holds sentimental value, I allways want to find new ways to use it.

So this is what I used in the test.

Now after a bit of work with the mini hatchet. I had to baton the back of the hatchet becuase it does have enough weight to split by it's self. After cutting the wood, the head was a bit loose, which would not only be dangerous, but could you imagine in a survival situation this thing flying off? and even if you did find it, you would need to make a new handle. I just dont think its big enough to do this type of work or a regular basis, which you would need in a bad situation.

Then about 10 minutes in I had a nice little pile of wood, ready to be burned up.

Now ready to get the fire going. It took around 3-4 swips to light the lint, and as I had to use the edge, I was pleasntly surprized to not see any damage. I also had some ceder sticks that were split up. Also cut some grass with it as well.

And after some burning. (the wood didnt burn to well as it was actually a bit damp)

Well, there ya go. All in all, its a nice little tool, but. Considering the ability to baton wood better, longer reach, the ability for SD and the comfort,
the BK7 takes it all. The hatchet is nice, but the bk7 takes the lead in every section by alittle more. Another thing I noticed was the mini was really fatiguing on the hand while whittling shavings, this is kinda obvious, but it didnt click until I was actually doing it.

Either way, this little hatchet will allways have a place in my heart, but the BK7 is just plainly more efficent. The only thing I havent tried which I want
to, is that little coil on the Becker through's spraks from a firesteel great. I just need to try and see if the can light tinder with out knocking it and
the shavings all around because of its 7" blade, and awkwardness for finer tasks. (which is why I have a revolver H;))

i suggest grabbing the knife behind the edge right next to the very tip, where you don't use it. using this little tiny half inch of blade you can throw nice hot sparks from a ferro rod.
this will damage the edge, but it will damage a part that is rarely used and this will also keep the rest of the knife away from your tinder pile.
unless of course you use the tip often to drill bearings etc for bowdrill fire...but it will still work for that even if it is a little dull.

nice review by the way. with a smaller size like that i prefer a thinner tool, like a tomahawk

Nice review of your Grandpas small axe. Do you know who made it?

I don't know if I can back the recommendation of using a part of the 7s cutting edge to strike sparks, because the tip is a very handy part of usage for me, but if it's all you have, it will certainly do the job.

I personally dont think I would, I'm just going to square off the back and use that, I may sand down the swedge and use that aswell. The reason I mention the Coil is because the swedish firesteel fits perfectly into the coil, I mean perfect.

It'll be neat to find out either way, I'd do it today, but its raining out, damn rain.

No better time to test your firestarting skills, than in wet conditions. Even if you don't succeed, you will know what not to do next time.:D

Great post fonly I too have been using a small hatchet lately. It is a Grans
brunks wildlife and I still like to split small rounds with my knives and a baton.
I just wish I did not damage any of my blades but I have. Even the custom
#4 with the 7" Blade from the Grohman Co. I noticed it yesterday when I was cutting up some french bread. I will post some pics later today. It is raining here today so I will not be cutting trees today.
Well Take care,
Bryan

Neato little hatchet! Great pics too!

Even the custom

If you dont mind me asking, and if you wish to not say thats fine, how much did that cost? if you dont want to post it here, could you e-mail me the price.

That really intrigues me, a #4 with a 7" blade, could replace my BK7

Nice review, thanks! I hear you on the "wishing it worked a little better". I have several tools that I have to just claim sentimental value for, as there are better tools out there. But it's ok to still like them!

Hi Fonly it cost about a $150.00 I called up to Grohman knives about four years or so and talked with Lisa she seems to always answer the phone
when I called. I asked if they would make a # 4 with a 7" blade for me and how much it would cost. A short time later she called back and said they could make one and I think it was a $147.00 ( I Think ) any way I said here is my credit card number and it was about 20 days and it arrived here in Nebraska. I had it made in carbon and flat grind. I have a little ripple in the blade because of hitting it through some rounds of mulberry and hedgeapple
but that is what happens when you abouse a tool.
Take care
Bryan

That is freggin awsome, I looked at the Deer and mosse a few times and thought it would make a nice big knife, I'll have to look into that when I get back to NS.
