Grandfather gave me this sword. What is it?

My grandfather gave me sword he bought somewhere oversees probably 30+ years ago. He said it is an "un-commissioned officers samurai sword." I would like to find out more about it but don't no where to start (besides asking here.)

It doesn't feel very sturdy or well made to me. It could just be some knockoff. I'm going to hold onto it for sentimental value but I'm still really curious about it's story.
 
I was at a gun show last month and a guy had a table with out 15 very old looking rusty and dirty swords. He claimed they were WW2 Japanense swords that were found in SE Asia. None of them were actual WW2 swords and I think this is starting to become a type of scam.I think these are from China and are made to look like they are old. Buyer beware!
