Last night while cleaning up my gun closet I found\refound my Grandfathers old Case hunting knife. Its a stainless blade with "Arapaho" on the blade. The blade is pretty scratched up and the tip is bent\broken, but it was my Grandfathers, so it has a lot of sentimental value. An old case leather sheath was in perfect shape.

First of all: what can you tell me about the knife? Was it any good?

Second: Is there anyone around Vermont that could regrind tip, get the scratches out, etc. so I could proudly carry it and use it while hunting.

(I also came across my grandmother's old 5mm Remington Magnum. Almost impossible to get ammo for :( )

anyone? Beuller?
Sorry, I don't know what to say. You're lucky, though. Neither of my grandads (who died before I was born) had blades that made it to me. My one granddad was a police lieutenant but when he died in the 50's my grandmother turned his personal sidearms over to the police (presumably)for disposal. Now everytime I pass a manhole cover I sigh. :(

Okay, no opinions about it, but can someone point me to a site or forum that might have information about the Case or can point me to someone who can refinish a blade for me in Vermont?

Btw, you just started this thread this morning, give people some time to answer it. Lots of folks are working right now and won't read this until the weekend. Your knife has been sitting around for years it can wait a bit to be refinished.

You probably should post this over in the B. Levine knife ID section of the boards here. The moderator may move it there anyway.

Okay, Okay, I'm just into the instant gratification thing. :o I don't use a computer at home, so I won't see any responses over the weekend! Anyway, I had noticed that there is an amazing amount of traffic on this place so I figured it would be okay.

That knife is from the 70's. They were styled some what like the traditional fixed blades Buck put out. These weren't Case's top-of-the-line, but they wre certainly comparable to the Schrades, Westerns, etc... of the era. I'm not sure of the steel they used, but it's probably 420 or 440A, or something close.

For repair, e-mail Case at www.wrcase.com . The makers section here might turn up someone willing to help also. It's actually not that hard to refinish a modern knife yourself, if you really wanted to, just re-tip using various stones, then work through various high grit sandpapers.
