Keep this on the Fridge

Did You Know That? Drinking two glasses of Gatorade can relieve headache pain almost immediately -- without the unpleasant side effects caused by traditional "pain relievers."

Did you know that Colgate toothpaste makes an excellent salve for burns.

Before you head to the drugstore for a high-priced inhaler filled with mysterious chemicals, try chewing on a couple of curiously strong Altoids peppermints. They'll clear up your stuffed nose.

Achy muscles from a bout of the flu? Mix 1 Tablespoon of horseradish in 1 cup of olive oil. Let the mixture sit for 30 minutes, then apply it as a massage oil, for instant relief for aching muscles.

Sore throat? Just mix 1/4 cup of vinegar with 1/4 cup of honey and take 1 tablespoon six times a day. The vinegar kills the bacteria.

Cure urinary tract infections with Alka-Seltzer. Just dissolve two tablets in a glass of water and drink it at the onset of the symptoms. Alka-Seltzer begins eliminating urinary tract infections almost instantly -- even though the product was never been advertised for this use.

Honey remedy for skin blemishes... Cover the blemish with a dab of honey and place a Band-Aid over it. Honey kills the bacteria, keeps the skin sterile, and speeds healing. Works overnight.

Listerine therapy for toenail fungus... Get rid of unsightly toenail fungus by soaking your toes in Listerine mouthwash. The powerful antiseptic leaves your toenails looking healthy again.

Easy eyeglass protection... To prevent the screws in eyeglasses from loosening, apply a small drop of Maybelline Crystal Clear nail polish to the threads of the screws before tightening them.

Coca-Cola cure for rust... Forget those expensive rust removers. Just saturate an abrasive sponge with Coca Cola and scrub the rust stain. The phosphoric acid in the coke is what gets the job done.

Cleaning liquid that doubles as bug killer... If menacing bees, wasps, hornets, or yellow jackets get in your home and you can't find the insecticide, try a spray of Formula 409. Insects drop to the ground instantly.

Smart splinter remover...just pour a drop of Elmer's Glue-All over the splinter, let dry, and peel the dried glue off the skin. The splinter sticks to the dried glue.

Hunt's tomato paste boil cure...cover the boil with Hunt's tomato paste as a compress. The acids from the tomatoes soothe the pain and bring the boil to a head.

Balm for broken blisters...To disinfect a broken blister, dab on a few drops of Listerine... a powerful antiseptic.

Heinz vinegar to heal bruises... Soak a cotton ball in white vinegar and apply it to the bruise for 1 hour. The vinegar reduces the blueness and speeds up the healing process.

Kills fleas instantly. Dawn dish washing liquid does the trick. Add a few drops to your dog's bath and shampoo the animal thoroughly. Rinse well to avoid skin irritations. Goodbye fleas.

Rainy day cure for dog odor... Next time your dog comes in from the rain, simply wipe down the animal with Bounce or any dryer sheet, instantly making your dog smell springtime fresh.

Eliminate ear mites... All it takes is a few drops of Wesson corn oil in your cat's ear. Massage it in, then clean with a cotton ball. Repeat daily for 3 days. The oil soothes the cat's skin, smothers the mites, and accelerates healing.

Quaker Oats for fast pain relief....It's not for breakfast anymore! Mix 2 cups of Quaker Oats and 1 cup of water in a bowl and warm in the microwave for 1 minute, cool slightly, and apply the mixture to your hands for soothing relief from arthritis pain.

DISCLAIMER
I personally haven't tried any of the Home Cures yet. There are some that do have some interest for me and I will try them. I posted these as General Interest in hopes that people may have tried them or be able to add to them. If you have any problem with any of them, please take them up with Grandma and not me. ;)

i've heard that it's not really good to use toothpaste for burns.

Burn Treatment

I think that you're supposed to cool the burn down under cool running water for 10-20 minutes to stop the burn. Since burns usually go deep inside the skin the toothpaste won't be able to stop the burn other than relieving it for awhile. It takes awhile for the water to penetrate and stop the burn.

By the way, there is this chinese medication which can stop the burn immediately. It's like magic. What i've seen them do for a demonstration is boil a pot of water. It was really boiling. And the guy poured it on his hand. He was jumping around like a monkey from the pain. After that he immediately put the cream on and it cooled the burn down without any after effects.

My niece a few years ago (about 5 at the time) was bringing one of those gel filled hot water bottles for her grandma which had just been heated up in the microwave. It exploded on her. She was scalded really badly and her dad who has passed away now put the little cream that they had on certain areas and those were the only areas that didn't have any marks. She still has really bad burn marks on her thighs and all but the places where the cream was put on are clear.

My mom went to china a few years ago and saw the demonstration and they used a red hot poker on his hand instead. She bought the cream and it's called Wan Jin Fu Bao. I've been trying to locate it at the chinese medication shops but haven't found it yet.

I find Aloe to work great for burns.

My niece burned her arm quite nicely last summer. We just pulled the hotdog roaster off the grill, set it on the table. She reached over to get the katsup.

3 lines angled along her arm from it. Dragged her over to the tap, ran water on it to cool it down, got the water off with a soft cloth, and put aloe over it and a proper dressing. a week later you could barely tell she was burned, a month later it was clear.

carry a bottle of 99% pure aloe in my firstaid kit, have for years.

One home sore throat remedy that my family has used is dissolving 1/2 tsp. salt in 6-8 oz. of warm water and use as a throat wash.

My Mom used to have me gargle with that all the time.
I've also heard it's not bad as a nose spray.

Ahhhh sniffling up salt water...the memories.
My dad is big on listerine for everything. And when the listerine isn't strong enough it's time for the witch hazel.
Throw some vics in the closet and you've got all the bases covered.

Oh yeah, Pop's old time remedy for a sore throat:
Tie a dirty sock around your neck.
And leave it there.

Makes sense to me, most nasal sprays are just saline, or in oter terms salt water.

Hairspray is good for flys and bees too. It sticks to their wings and hardens and then they can't fly and you can swat 'em much easier

Alka-Seltzer, BTW, is just asprin really. But, because it's dissolved in water, it's very fast-acting. You don't have to wait for your body to dissolve it as you do with asprin tablets. If you have a headache and really need fast relief, take Alka-Seltzer. You may need to follow with some asprin tablets a little bit later for long-term relief.

Alka-Seltzer also contains Sodium Bicarbonate which is also known as baking soda. This is a very good acid neutralizer, so it's good for an upset stomach. That's what gives Alka-Seltzer a bit of a dual function. But, it's also a clue to another old-fashioned cure. For an upset stomach, dissolve a few teaspoons of baking soda in water and drink it. It doesn't taste very good, but it it does work for your stomach and is a handy trick if you're out of Rolaides. (It's high in Sodium, by the way, and people on a restricted sodium diet shouldn't use this.)

The third component of Alka-Seltzer is citric acid, the acid in lemon and orange juice. That would seem to contradict the anti-acid properties of Alka-Seltzer. You can see why it's there by putting a bit of baking soda in some orange juice. It foams up. That's what happens when the citric acid and sodium bicarb mix in water. And that's what gives Alka-Seltzer it's fizz. The citric acid is in there just to create the fizz. Why? Because the fizz creates a mixing action in the glass that helps dissolve the asprin. The Alka-Seltzer formula is such that there's more sodium bicarb than citric acid so the resulting mixture is, overall, antacid.

Salt, by the way, is a natural antiseptic. It kills germs. This is why food can be preserved by packing it in salt. Before the invention of Neosporin, doctors used to pack wounds with salt too. And it works. So, gargling a sore throat with salt water will actually work for mild infections.

How about using urine( your own),

A couple of drops in the ear for ear ache

This is an old time remedy that I have never had the courage to try, but is a sworn by remedy for ear infections.

Some one please try this and post your results

Urine...
If you ever get stung by a Jelly fish, you're going to want to have someone pee on you to take away the pain. If I had a choice it would be Selma Hyak. ;)

Working in a check out line at the old hardware store there was a bubba that had a cold sore on his top lip. He sad the best cure for it was ear wax and showed me how he did it...after running to the bathroom to puke I never saw him again. It sho' didn't bother me either. :barf:

For Arthritis:
Soak raisins, they must be white raisins,in gin for three weeks.Eat nine per day.An old African woman taught me that one.

If you would just as soon not have someone pee on you,try Adolphs meat tenderizer on the jellyfish sting.

As for the jellyfish sting, you don't usually have meat tenderizer at the beach.
A Naval doctor told me urine was the best first aid at that point, as you want first aid right away, not after a lengthy trip to a clinic or home.
Also, rubbing lightly with some sand at the same time as the pee help will remove stinging cells left by some jellyfish.

Up North we have many beaches that are plagued by box jelly fish

These suckers can and have killed

The standard remedy is white vinegar

Works like a charm
