Hello all, new to the forum and to knife collecting. I've been struggling on a gift for my first grandson...the daughter is due the end of the month. I've just started collecting knives and it dawned on me, maybe a small Sebenza, engrave with his initials and birth date? Suggestions or thoughts?

Thanks so much!

Bob

I'd say wait. Put the money in the bank to take him to Blade when he's 18 or get him a custom made when he's a bit older and has developed some character.

Hold off on that. The little dofus won't appreciate it for, say a couple of decades. (But you would:D.) I'd get him a mega-package of diapers (which your daughter will appreciate) first.

I would wait and hope that the kid is born on a Monday through Thursday (CRK is open those days). After he is born, I would immediately call CRK and see what knives they made that exact same day and what dealers are getting the knife. Then I'd buy it, put a little note in the box "just in case" and then give it to him when he is older, gets married, has a kid, etc...

That is a cool idea. I don't envision him getting the knife until he's 18 or 21. But I think how cool it would be to have something of that quality and value that my grandfather bought for me...it's pretty awesome.

This is a cool idea too. I live in Chattanooga so Blade is kinda in my backyard. That still leaves me having to find him something to commemorate his birth.

I've done this for both of my kids. One day, I am gong to give the knives to them and tell them to give it to their kids when the time is right.

No way! I'm just over here in Ringgold and usually hangout around North Shore and downtown often! A small or large 21 would be a fantastic gift for you to save for him. If you give him cheap blades starting early and get him into the hobby as he grews, he will surely understand what kind of gift he'll be recieving. I'm searching for one for my daughter who's birthday is 1-11-13. She's already gaining interest into her little tikes blades and cutting her baby dolls' food up. Haha!

Like its been said you need to get them into knives early. Waiting until 18/21 for a first knife I expect would not work well. I would say a SAK when they are early teens, then when older and would not lose it present the CRK.

For sure...his dad loves guns and coin collecting so I think Phillip (unborn grandson) will have an interest in things he's exposed to. I certainly intend to share the interest as he ages, starting with much less expensive knives.

My wife looked at me like I lost my mind when I busted out laughing...too funny!

This is a very great idea.. Congratulations.. I had already thinking of doing something like that, when I have a son. A special knife, for a special kid..

So I wanted to provide an update. I thought this was a terrific idea.

All three of these were born on the same date...8/25/16. Thanks for such a wonderful suggestion and to Matt at CRK for making it happen.

Congrats grandpa!

I wish I was into knives when my daughter was born a couple years ago, but she'll get a fancy watch instead. I'm still on the look out for her bday knife though. I found a praetorian, but it's not my style.

Why not buy him one now made on the day of his birth and then one made on the same day exactly 18 years later?
