I was at the LLBean factory outlet today in Maine.

Picked up a small Granfors Bruks hatchet, one pound head, 3 inch blade thats as sharp as many of my knives. Cost me 80.00 with tax on sale from 98.00 in the case.

As I just purchased the Dwight McLemore bowie and tomahawk books from Palladin Press, this may suit the needs of the hawk part of the system. The handle is somewhat shorter than a normal hawk as designed for fighting and made by many makers, but it swings fast enough due to the heads weight.

I have heard nothing but good about the Granfors Bruks and I have to say I liked it the minute I picked it up. Funny thing is it was 20.00 more than the small axe next to it by the same mfger.

Leather sheath has no carry options for the belt so it will be carried handle slipped between the pants and belt for now.

I don't know if I would carry something that sharp like that..one fall and we'll be reading about how you gave yourself an appendectomy.

Sounds like you got yourself a mini, Brownie. A fine purchase indeed. I too was amazed that it cost more than the next size up, but it is a heck of a tool. Small enough to even stuff down into a pocket, yet large enough to do it's intended job.
Congrats.

I had heard from others in the know on axes/hatchets that the Bransfors Bruks were the best in the industry and came shaving sharp but had never seen one.

It is very sharp indeed and most definately could skin game with it. Had to grab it when I saw it for that price. Very handy, I'm thinking of leaving it in the car.

Off the top, you could chop/break glass etc. your way out of the vehicle, chop your way into a vehicle if you had to extricate someone else in an emergency and may make a hell of a anti-car jacking weapon if you had it set up and ready to go.

Small enough to have it with you all the time if you so chose and only weighs a pound. It may also get stuck into the BOB, not sure what I want to do with it yet.

Thanks for the remarks from everyone.

CDNWIDE You are correct that the Grangor's hatchet is extremly sharp. Gransfor's provides a leather sheath for that, and I think for all their other models. I have the small hatchet, and the Hunters ax. Love them both.

Hi guys,

Just out of interest what initials do you have stamped out on the Gränsfors' head? Mine has MS.

The reason that the smaller GB axes are more expensive is that their heads are more expensive to forge.

I have a GB Wildlife Hatchet, A GB Hunters Axe, and a GB Scandinavian Forest Axe and all are great tools.

I use the Wildlife Hatchet the most.

Think you will find all the mini axe's have LP on the head

I think the Small forest axe is the most versatile of their axes or hatchets and also better priced.

What separates this one from the rest is the 19" long handle. It can be used very well with either one hand for finer work or two hands for serious chopping, yet it's iight enough to carry in a pack.
