Hi gang.

I just got an early Bday present from my sweetie (thanks babe!) and I thought I'd take a moment a share some first impressions of it with you all.

Many of you have seen these before but this is my first one and I am way to excited about it so here we go!

First impressions:

Well I had done some fairly extensive research on these axes prior to purchase so when I held it for the first time it was what I expected. Feels good in the hand, well balanced. Can't wait to hit some wood with it.

The head is in forged condition and looks very good. I like the rough/rustic look of it. I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, but I love it.

Here are some pics:

This is the axe as I received it:

This axe was forged by smith Kjell-Åke Sjölund as is evidenced by the initials on the head:

I find this feature adds a certain "flavour" to the product.

The axe certainly feels like a quality tool, and from what I have read from others I won't be disappointed with it.

The only thing that I found somewhat lacking was the mask.

While it is sufficient, I feel that for the money ($150.00 CDN taxes in) a better mask would be nice.

Here are some shots of the mask:

Before any gets their panties in a knot, the mask is by no means a deal breaker, and most folks on here could make themselves a new one (I will be doing that as soon as I return from my camping trip next week). It's just one of those "wouldn't it be nice if" things. But I guess your spending the money on the tool after all right?!

Some mods that I hope to do to it:

1. New mask (said that already).
2. Wrap the handle with leather cord.
3. Either leather wrap the handle just at the base of the head or maybe kydex over leather to offer some over-swing protection to the wood.

I'll post pics as I go.

I hope you all enjoyed this post.

PM if you have any questions.

Thanks!

Steve

GB's are fantastic . The dang things are so sharp and remain so even after a good workout. I love mine...

Thanks for the pics and post, some shots of what the axe does would be nice too. I have been curious about this one, especially after owning a number of with the 19" handle, which was a wee bit short.

I'm torn between the Scandinavian and the Small Forest Axe myself...

I managed to get a chance to use the axe briefly this past week during our camping trip and I have to say that so far I am very impressed.

The rumors of these axes being razor sharp from the factory are true.

I easily shaved about an inch of hair off my leg testing it.

The axe is just long enough for me. Any longer would be too much and any shorter would be frustrating. It is light enough to make it easily packable.

It plowed through the firewood (which was sold to us much wetter than it should have been) without any trouble.

I will be putting it to some more serious use over the coming months and will post more thoughts as I collect them.

For now I have to say that I am very happy with it!

Wow. I need that size GB axe.

I put SnoSeal on the sheath to my SFA. That was a good move.

I'd love to see these mods.

Chris.

It's a great axe, I've had one for a couple of years now and it's a pleasure to use every time I have need.

Slight derail but would wrapping either leather or cord or 550 cord around the handle not retain moisture against the handle?
