So it turns out, if you go to a big hardware/lumber store like Home Depot and tell them you are renovating your kitchen, they will take you all over their cabinet and counter top area and give you samples. So far I've only gotten laminate but once I explained to the wife why I wanted them, she feels sure she can get me granite scraps as "testers" hehe. I'm sending her out next weekend.

That sounds like a very poor way to go. Go to a place where they are doing the counters and ask if they have any sink cut outs they want to get rid of. I was given a huge double sink size without even having to wait. Frank

Yes, ,Sean, lying about something isn't the right way to get it. Just tell the folks why you want something and they will gladly give it to you. If not, then buy it or ask elsewhere.

I hate to sound all moral on things like this, But look at it this way:
when someone says his kid has cancer and gets a free vacation or other stuff, and we find out the kid is fine, we think he should be thrown in jail.
When someone says they are ex-military and need to test your knives, and you find out that they are just getting free knives - you want to beat them up.
But if you say you are remodeling your kitchen to get free granite, that is OK?
All are nothing but different degrees of a lie to get something for free.

I didnt lie about it, we were in to look at cabinets and countertops to renovate our kitchen before we sell our house. They have one cabinet that has counter scraps from other peoples counters and they give them to you to take home so you can match it with your walls and stuff.

It was your wording, not mine. If you ask for the pieces to use in the shop, and they are freely given, it is an entirely different thing.

I apologize if it was misconstrued but after we decided what countertop we were going to use, instead of throwing out the pieces, I said I could use them in the shop and after explaining what for and why granite would be better, she said what she did.

that's for a box they should have individuals underneath , it's black . Home Depot in Canada is pretty standard across the country. Even look on the website for tiles/ granite by price.

I did and couldnt find any. The only granite besides the countertops was backsplash pieces 4" wide for $20+. I was not advocating the use of deception to get some scrap pieces, I was relating what happened when I went to the store.

I bought a 12"x12" black granite floor tile at Lowe's Friday evening for $5 plus tax. It was with the ceramic floor tiles. The sales assistant didn't even know he had granite, he thought all he had was marble.

Ya it's with the ceramic tiles , they have marble too in 12x12 slab which I might buy for making pizza and bread dough :) . For some reason its not on the site anymore , it was last week and I saw it in the store 2 days ago. Maybe it's discontinued that's really weird maybe I should buy another slab just in case but sorry for doubting you .

I was in HD one day looking at 12"x12" granite tiles and saw one with a broken corner, picked it up and asked the nearest orange apron what were they going to do with it and explained why I wanted it; brief conversation between a manager type and the orange shirt and it was marked as a 'throwaway/discard/do not sale (my words)' by the manager and handed to me with a thank you. There are usually a few broken tiles if you look for them.

Are the polished marble tiles any good for using in the same manner? A friend of mine might give me her marble pastry/dough board if she decides to upgrade to a larger one.
