This knife belonged to my mom and she got it from her mom. I can't remember the last time it was used in the kitchen. My mom has always used serated knives and this poor guy got tossed to the side and neglected. Eventually it became corroded and for a while was used at a gardening implement.
Here's how it looked with just a little cleaning: the blade had some rust but the worst part was the tang. It was badly corroded and the handle was coming apart.
First I just cleaned the blade up a little. I like the patina so I so I was pretty gentle and focused on the rust.
Then I sanded down the handles and pins and put it back together... It didn't look too bad
I could have left it like this but I decided to try to make some handles. (I still have the old ones and can go back if I want)
I used some scrap wood I had lying around.
After some carving, sanding, and a little wax.
I just kept working on it until it felt nice in my hand. I have to say I'm really loving this blade. I put a nice edge on it and I think it's going to be my go-to meat slicer.
I'll might take another go with the handles later on but for now these are fine.
