One of these is going to be a birthday present so please help.
Can anyone tell me from a personal experience the difference between Gransfors Hunters Axe and the Small Forest Axe?

On the Gransfors web page they say that they are similar with only slight differences in pattern and poll.

They say that the blades are thin. Does that mean that the axe will chip easily?

Thanks in advance ;)

The blades are thin, but they are not so thin they will chip easily. There is a reason that GB is recommended by just about every bushcrafter in the world.

The difference is what you just listed: the shape of the poll (the hunters has a rounded poll, the SFA has a flat poll for pounding tent stakes) and the handle is slightly differently shaped.

I think for cutting wood and other camp chores, the SFA will be better. The square poll will do much better for pounding tent stakes and non-iron splitting wedges.

Look them both up on youtube to see how they look relative to a person's hand.

i also beleive that the hunters axe has a more rounded edge in case you need to skin something with it

6749 is correct. I have a hunter's axe. The poll is rounded over and polished smooth. The purpose of which is to separate an animals hide from the muscle. A very simple skinning tool.

The poll on the forest axe is squared for pounding. I too have a Large forest axe, I'm guessing it is pretty much the same as the small. Both great axes, but if you want a good all around utility axe and don't have much need for skinning things, I'd go with the forest axe. It will do a better job pounding tent stakes and whatnot.

This is a little off-topic, but since you guys are already paying attention here, I've been looking at buying both a GB Hunter's Axe and the Ruana hunter's axe/hatchet. Yeah, I know the Ruana is more than twice as expensive, but I think it'll probably hold its value better, and will get the job done at least as well (or better). I'll use whatever I buy for field dressing elk. Your opinions?

I would go with the GB Hunter's axe over the Ruana for a number of reasons. First, the Ruana is just over 10'' in length, close to the size of a GB mini. I have a mini and while it is an excellent small axe, I would not want to field dress large game with it. Just too small IMO.

Secondly, I prefer the handle on the GB. The lower half is textured for better grip when hands get slippery and it is wood (which I like on axes).
