Well I've been waiting for my GB wildlife hatchet since Oct.
Out of stock, held up in customs.... no problem, I don't NEED this hatchet.

Yesterday got a email back after checking order status, that GB ( I gather the U.S. import div.) burned to the ground, all inventory lost. They need to find new HQ, and then wait at least 8 weeks for stock to arrive from Sweden.

So... don't anybody be in a hurry to order anything for awhile.

Now the question for GB users, do I wait? are these axes really worth the premium price?

One more question, Above wildlife hatchet, or the small forest/ hunters ax? which one seems most useful to you ?
Thanks.

Burned to the ground, eh? That really sucks.

I just wonder why you ordered it from Sweden when they are readily available in the States?

Wow. God bless that distributor. This is awful. What a rotten tragedy. At least no one died.

Tullamore Dew's distillery burned to the ground. We bought all we could get, then waited 14 years to get more, so 8 weeks doesn't seem so bad.

The Red Cross provided drinks and snacks for the many firefighters on the scene.

Marshmellows and eggnog :)

Sry..

The smallest one is a cutie, but really, a small Wetterlings would be just as good and very easy to rework to GB standards.

Its the SFA that really stands out for most people. However, that being said it depends too on the type of area you live in and the type of wood(s) you will be cutting with it.

Old Jimbo has a test on his site on this very matter, the results are interesting.

Very interesting Dinkum, I've looked at the Wetterlings before, I'll look at them again. The last review of a Wetterlings I read was not as complimentary, thus the move towards the GB, but let me be candid, for the amount of times I need a small ax, either one will be fine.

I looked at the GF wildlife hatchet, and also had trouble finding one in stock. So, I bought a small Wetterlings, a Snow and Healy medium splitting axe, and a CS Trail Hawk, all 3 for the price of the GW. I profiled the edges and sharpened the Wetterlings and S&H. They both will push cut paper. I stripped and sharpened the trail hawk, and cut the handle off about 5 inches. All excellent tools, and I have about $ 110.00 total in all three. This makes more sense to me, and I have 3 new toys. Bill.

NO DOUBT worth the wait and I encourage everyone to own one !!!!
Hate to hear about the fire..Hope they do well... I had the below experiance with them and it sold me on the company!! I will sing their praises..

Customer service is top notch and they pride themselves on a quality product. I bought the wildlife online about a year ago. I already had the Mini ( that thing is a superb piece of craftsmanship and is super handy) and when I received my Wildlife the Poll was a bit roughly shaped and there was a smidge off-running angle to the head(not totally inline with handle). Actually only we hardcore knife guys would even notice the small asthetic issues on my axe and even then I admit they were fairly minor, but I had high expectations after owning the Mini.

I sent a Email with pictures to the US rep, who fowarded the mail to the owner before calling me to apologize. The owner had asked him to send the axe back to the company for inspection..The rep and I had a great conversation about the company and the owners belief in perfection in his axes..

The axes are just a very small percentage of sales(they actually make clothing, primarily long johns), yet the pride in the axes is amazing. I forgot the reps name, but he was able to talk the talk on axes/knives and I could tell he was no Admin desk jockey hired to sell product. He had pride in the axes and he was aware most owners of the axes were knife guys who expected a better product than your average camper.. Based on his description of the company it sounds like the axe sales numbers are really so minor I'm suprised they still make them at all.. It seems pride in their product is all that keeps them in the axe business...

Within 2 weeks time they not only sent me a brand new PERFECT axe, but it also had a one-of-a-kind beautiful dark hickory handle, that was no doubt specially picked.

Top notch Product and Super top notch Company and Customer Service!!
Unless you get a fully custom made axe, there is nothing that comes close in my experiance with axes!

The Mini Belt Hatchet is a handy addition to the "kit", very sharp from the forge (axes that shave are not the norm at hardware stores). Few, if any, "production" makers sign their product as do the great craftsmen at GB.

Just went and googled this and found the pics of each and I really like the mini belt hatchet. Has anyone tried the Replica's of old axes? The French trade and the British grade Tomahawks look good.
