i have never used one of those hand axe's, but i have one of the mini's.. i love it..

i don't think they're the same??

Looks like GB's version of the Gerber Paxe. I have a Paxe and am always wondering why I bought it. Seems like the best use is as a splitting wedge with a handle. ( don't do steel on steel tho )

Would this be because most of those who post on the W&SS subforum don't know how to use a hatchet or axe?

I ask this because IMO a hatchet in the hands of someone who knows how to use it, is one of the most versatile outdoor tools there is.

What do you reckon both Nessmuck & Kephart thought of a hatchet as an outdoor tool?

As such, I'm of the opinion it has it's place in any wilderness forum

G'day Ken C

And you'd be wrong in thinking that. You posted a general question that has nothing to do with W&SS. Keep posting general gear threads in W&SS and it'll keep getting moved. End of story.
You really should have another look at who originally posted the question :D

Kind regards

I think the key word is "use" and that’s why it was posted in the Wilderness Forum.

I have the 3 GB's for wilderness travel and survival. I have the GB Mini, Wildlife and SFA. I really like all 3 and you can not go wrong with any of them. My 2 favorites are the Mini and SFA. The Mini is the most used of all 3. Do not let it fool you buy its size. This is the most useful for making things in the woods. The way it's built gives you great accuracy and you can remove wood for plank cooking, tent pegs or whatever else fast. The SFA would be my overall choice if you thought major fire or shelter requirements were needed. The head shape actually cuts wood better than the Wildlife hatchet when making things as listed above. The SFA is my first choice, but the Mini at 13 ounces gets the most use because I can tuck it in my belt or back pocket and not even notice it's there. The Wildlife is great also, but the other 2 get the most use.

I think the handle or the picture posted is too short. I am not fond of short handle with heavier heads. The Mini has a short handle, but the head is perfectly proportional for optimal us.

This one looks like it would have to be used with a baton since there isn't enough handle to make it effective as a chopper. It does look to be set up well for carving and close work.
