I recently had the opportunity to chat with one of the Gransfors Bruks representatives. He told me that they have re-styled the Wildlife Hatchet so that it looks like a larger version of the Mini Belt Hatchet. There have apparently been some minor changes to the head, including polishing the hammer poll. The handle has also been streamlined a bit to more closely resemble the Mini's handle style. When they hit dealer shelves I'm going to buy a new-style Wildlife to give away as a gift. I will be interested to see how it looks and feels when I get my hands on it.

Unfortunately, there is also some bad news. Apparently there won't be another shipload of Minis coming from Sweden until April. if you want one before then, better find a dealer who has them in stock.

The current design seemed fine to me, I will be interested in your impressions of the change.

Cliff,

I too like the pronounced "knob" (or whatever you want to call it) on the lower side of the end of the Wildlife's handle. It gives me a really secure feeling. However, the more gently tapered configuration of the Mini handle may work just as well. We'll see.

I'll be interested to see if the changes to the Wildlife head include eliminating the portion of the blade that extends forward beyond the plane in which the hole is located. On the Mini, the leading edge ("toe"?) of the blade does not extend forward. It drops straight down from the hole in the head, then sweeps rearward a tiny bit. The trailing edge of the blade ("heel"?) extends proportionally farther back on the Mini than on the old Wildlife.

Dealers should have them soon and the mysteries will be resolved!
