Gransfors Bruks or Wetterling?

I am undecided about the GB small forest axe or the W small hunters axe. The W is much less in price but the reviews on the GB have been outstanding. Any opinions?

I'm perfectly happy with my Wetterling. Not that I wouldn't mind owning an axe that was even nicer, it's just that I certainly don't need an axe that was even nicer. YMMV, of course.

I hear the Husqvarna axes are superb and made by wetterlings but cheaper.

Not by wetterlings - by hults bruk. And not all of them are. An increasing amount are being made in china which is why they're cheaper. This according to cegga who I believe would know what he's talking about (living in sweden, being quite an axe enthusiast and a custom axe maker):

Too iffy for my tastes so I'd stick with wetterlings or GB. I'm sure they'd still be quite a bargain though if you can get a swedish one made by hults bruk.

I think it's a matter of what you want. Although I haven't owned a wetterlings, what I've heard is that they're functionally just as good. The GB may be nicer as far as fit and finish and may have nicer steel but the end user probably won't notice things in use. Meaning they'll both chop just as well and last you a lifetime. Now, if you want nice for the sake of having nice then get the GB. I have a mini and it's pretty...pretty.:D

I see, the description for the Husq hatchet is still "made in Sweden" so I guess that's Hults Bruk.

The GB SFA is a first rate small axe.

Buy the Wetterling for your strong teenage kids.

Buy the Gransfors Bruks for yourself!

You really can't go wrong with either one of them. But if you've got a little money that you don't mind blowing, the GB is definitely the way to go.

GB -- better fit and finish, comes shaving sharp

Wetterlings -- not quite as good F&F (but better than most others), and edge may need some work out of the box.

Add in the "rolex" mentality and 20 year warranty that comes with GB and this pretty much sums it up.

I would like to own a GB but I've split a lot of wood with my Wetterlings and have never felt short changed by it.
