which would you choose: the small forest, the hunter's, the wildlife, of the mini. considering money, uses, comfort, weight requirments, etc.

Moccasinman

I have the Small Forest Axe, and can't say enough good about it. Of the four you mention, it is the most hatchet/ax for the money. It is the same size as the Hunter's Axe, but has a slightly different shape to the handle, and a traditional hammer poll. The Hunter's Axe has a more rounded flay poll to assist in the skinning of game. I don't remember the prices, but I think the Small Forest Axe is in the same ballpark as the others you mention, and might even be cheaper. I've used mine for cutting limbs and small trees from shooting lanes and fence rows, and split quite a bit of kindling with it. It comes with a very sharp NIB edge that is really thin, for a factory edge, and probably is not well suited for chopping really hard wood. Mine is a dream to work with in the soft southern pine and hedge, though. It was money well spent.

I Have The Mini For All Day Carry And As A Small Belt Axe It's Excellent
Very Easy To Keep That Razor Edge Well Worth The Money As Are All There Axe's

I have the hunter's axe. excellent quality steel, great size and ergos for my uses. As thin and sharp as the edge is, it doesn't seem to roll or chip easily.
About that flay poll... either I don't understand the proper technique or it is not as handy as a good sharp skinner blade for taking the hide off. I tried it a few times as described in the owners guide but no thanks- I'll keep either my Dozier or my Madpoet skinner nearby (both D2).
Might help if you give us an indication what you need from an axe or hatchet.

i have mini and smallfa, was asking opinions of others- tell what you do with it, and why you chose that one

The mini is used as my belt axe, and is for cutting pegs for netting rabbits.
Shave sticks or fuzzes for firelighting wacking off the bits from rabbits that I don't want heads etc and other jobs not suited to my knife.
Oh and my girlfreind bought me it at the midland game fair three years ago
A very useful tool ;) .

Moc,
I have one of the mini's and have found it to be a great little axe. Being a little axe it can't do everything you might expect from a bigger axe. It does fit really well into a small pack or right inbetween your belt and pants. It is also small enough to use easily as a knife by choking up on the handle. It is one axe that you will probably have with you when you need one in an emergency. While not as effecient as a bigger axe it does cut way out of proportion to its size.
