I'm going to give the grapefruit patina a try, and I'm not entirely sure how to do it. Do I just stick my BK14 into the grapefruit and leave it there for a few hours, or is there a specific process?

I like to rub it, dry it, rub it, dry it and repeat until it becomes steady grey. Though I prefer lime or lemon instead of grapefruit.

Do you let it stand for any length of time, or just rub it on, and then dry iimmediatelyly?

I would slice the grapefruit and lay it on the blade. Let it sit for 20-30 minutes then turn it over and repeat. It will give a cool pattern to the patina. And if you don't like it or it's just not dark enough you can always sand it and try again. I've done it with mango, barbeque sauce and a couple of other things.
As always, post pics if you can. :D

I have a post up now on my grapefruit patina. Here is what I did. I peeled the grapefruit completely, the cut it into smaller pieces. Laid the knife in a ziplock and covered the side up with pieces of grapefruit. I actually smashed the grapefruit alittle once it was on the blade to get a little juice out of it and onto the blade. Left the ziplock back open halfway so air could get it, then laid a phone book on top of it all. Let is sit like that for 3.5 hours. Came back, flipped the knife on the other side and did the same exact thing. After another 3.5 hours, here is what I have now...

I've done a couple by just stabbing the knife into a whole grapefruit and leaving it. One was overnight and the other was 3-4 hours. I liked them both.

I just did a grapefruit on an ontario rd4 but i did it a little different. First i poured sone grapefruit juice in a tall glass with the knife in it up to the level on the knife that i wanted and i let it sit for 12 hours. It gave the blade a nice even dark color. But i wanted some pattern so the next day i peeled and sliced a grapefruit into 1/2 inch slices and put them on top and bottom of the knife with a weight on top and let it sit at room temp for 12 hours. I really liked how it turned out. Kind of a 2 layer patina.
