Graphics card problem

Ok, I don't know if Bladeforums is the best place to ask this, but since I don't have an account on any computer forums...

Yesterday I got a (according to the guy that gave it) nVidia GeForce 6600gt graphics card. I plugged the card to the pci-e port and tried to install drivers for it. The installer gives me an error that it "can not find any drivers that are compatible with my hardware." So I guess that my CPU can't detect the card. Does anyone know why could this be?

This is going to get moved to "Gadgets and Gear" when a mod sees it. Even on a knife forum we talk about computers problems. :)

My first question would be, did you download the correct drivers from nVidia?
Did you have a pci-e graphics card in the same slot before installing the nVidia?
Have you checked your system BIOS for any issues? If your computer was previously using an integrated card, the pci-e slot might be disabled.

First, look in your Device Manager to see if the card is detected. It'll be under graphics adaptors.
If it is, that's half the battle. Is there a yellow exclamation point next to it? Then it may be a hardware problem. If it's detected but not yet working, it's more likely the driver.

What a fast responce! Thanks!

I downloaded the GeForce 6-series drivers from nVidias site. Didn't work. I tried the automatic detection on their site too, but it only found two (same) Intel's chipset family-cards, that are integrated. I haven't had anything on the pci-e slot before. I've looked from the Device Manager, but it too only shows the integrated ones.
And I looked at the BIOS, but not being too familiar with, didn't find anything that would turn on the pci-e.

What O/S are you running?
As morrowj_98 stated, What were you using before for a graphics card?
From your 'error', it sees the card but cannot recognize it.

There are a lot of factors to figure in on this..

This place has the drivers you will need though. And maybe some answers.
I've been using this place for 9 or 10 yrs.
WHQL drivers are usually your friend, so keep that in mind. (means Windows certified)

**edited to add after seeing your latest post**
**You will need to disable on-board video in the BIOS. I'm not sure if you can/need to 'turn' the PCI-E slot on or not.**

Im running Windows XP.
How to disable on-board video? I remember seeing some VGA-thing to disable, is it that?

ok, first you have to be sure you have installed the chipset drivers for your motherboard, that are either VIA, INTEL, or NVIDIA
than, check and see what service pack your XP has installed, and try to download the latest one from microsoft-be sure its for your XP version, PRO, HOME and so on
unninstall the vga adapter from device manager in XP, and restart system
dont let windows search for drivers
download a driver for your card from http://www.guru3d.com/, where you can also find drivers for your motherboard
enter bios / setup when computer starts with F2, F1, F10, i dont know, it should be dispalyed on your screen and check for PCI x settings
if anything contact me via yahoo mess and maybe will figure out something :D
cheers

Ok, thanks everybody, I'll try to cope with this info. If for some reason I don't get it to work I'll wait 'till Monday for my friend who's good with this stuff to help me:D

And yes, I've tried plugging the monitor to the new card, but I get no visual.

How about this; does this card need a power lead? My new 8800GT does not, my previous card did. See if there's an external plug along the outside of the card that would take a standard power cable (the red ones).
Normally, if you install a card that's functioning, you'll get the "Found New Hardware" box right away; and Windows will ask you to look for the driver. (usually, you just disregard all that and install the driver from a disc or from a downloaded file.

If you're getting none of that, then the thing likely is not working.

the power plug for the 6600 gt is only for the agp versions of the card, because tha agp bus cant supply the power needed
the new cards need extra juice apart from pciex, but that is not the case with 6600gt
