i know tuff glide isnt that expensive, but out of curiosoty, is graphite an acceptable lube?
i don't know if there are different kinds, but the stuff i have in mind is the powder puff kind to lube lock keyholes.

Funny you should ask. I used exactly that (Lock-Ease) recently on a pivot that was giving me problems. Worked like a charm.

It's a little messy, so you may want to wipe your knife down afterward. Also, a day or two afteward, you might find some residue working its way onto the blade at the base. I just wiped it away with q-tip.

What Maxster said.

This particular knife had no synthetics on it, so I planned to blast the graphite out with Gun Scrubber if the graphite didn't work out.

I read somewhere the other day that Gun Scrubber is coming out with a version that's safe on synthetics. If so, that could be some cool stuff for cleaning knives.

yrs ago i used graphite like that for various tasks, worked ok, but imho tuffglide/rem oil work better, arent as messy, cost the same, and last longer. the graphite will really make a mess unless ya use it VERY sparingly.
