In a local garbage dumpster I found a few grass trimmer shafts , they are about 4 ft long x 9/32" diam with splines at each end of a tough hard steel not inclined to rust . Any idea what steel it is ?

That's just barely over 1/4" diameter. Those would make some nice punches and chisels, and perhaps a few other odds 'n ends you might need. If you're wondering about possible knife blade? Naw, wouldn't fool with it, just get a known steel. It could be good practice steel for forge welding.

I did that "mystery steel" route when I first started - now I tend to stick with known steels.

Am going to make a light spear out of it . For knives I have plenty of 1095 and old band saw steel which i think is 15n20

When I was forging as a kid ( age 11) we took rebar (and any other round steel rod) and made what we called Watusi spears. About five or six feet of bamboo and a two foot spearhead. Surprisingly, the rebar held up well after water quenching and gentle tempering over the coals. Man, did we have fun with those things.

If you do spearfishing those would make some NICE spears for hawaiian slings and similar.
