Hi all.

I think this is my first OP in traditionals. Had the camera out and decided to post a couple shots of these Case trappers.

I have had the red bone (SS) for about 6 months and just got the amber bone (CV) a couple weeks ago. I like these larger knives but use them lightly. My daily carries are knives that I can open easily as I have very weak finger nails and cannot use a nail nick. A largish exposed blade that I can grab onto works best - that or a thumb stud or assisted opener. Sadly that means I usually carry a modern folder so any suggestions for easy opening traditionals are welcome. I can usually manage to open a large Barlow or Sodbuster with my fingers and like those patterns but just don't have any that I can open easily and reliably. Usually I find myself using a coin or something similar to open knives like these Trappers. I do typical office work so use is very light. Mostly cutting food/fruit or some very light package/paper cutting. Thanks for any suggestions.

Enjoy.

Good looking trappers. My favorite is the dark redbone trapper in cv. I've carried trappers most of my life and find they are great utilitarian knives. I can't use smaller knives because I have bear paws and I like a handful when using a knife. Try a slimline trapper. They usually have a light pull and very pocket friendly.

There are knives made with easy-open features. Blades with a spine that sits fairly high out of the frame, or with a notch formed into the handles to allow you to pinch the blade between your thumb and finger to open it. Great Eastern Cutlery has made a number of these recently. Just search for EO or Easy Open, or in some cases EZ Open.

Case has made a few Copperhead knives in the past with a wharncliffe main and an EZ Open notch. I don't believe any of their current offerings feature that but they are always releasing or re-releasing variations of knife patterns, so maybe something will come out.

Nice looking Trappers, I don't have one personally but am actually eyeing them lately so this could actually be an addition to my little stable this year.

I like the Trapper pattern as well. Unfortunately my finger nails just won't open even the lightest opener. I have some neuropathy as well and makes it even more difficult.

Just went through the new Case catalog. One pattern that does look promising is the Trapperlock. It has a thumb stud and what looks to be a clip point blade and no nail nic at all. Have to find one now...

Would love to find a nice Case Barlow or Sodbuster where the blade sits way up from the frame.

I like them because of the size. The ones in the pics are a little over 4" closed. Nice hefty knife once I get it open.

Case made an easy open slimline trapper a year or two ago in antique bone that would be right up your alley. The easy open notch basically allows you to pinch the blade instead of using the nail nick.

Queen made a similar knife on the 11 pattern and GEC has many easy open knives as well.

Of the higher end traditional cutleries Canal Street Cutlery definitely has the lightest pulls across the board.
