Gray = glass, Clear = plastic?

The first clear ones were plastic but I understand the current clear ones are back to glass but that is just what I read. If you want to be sure it glass..always go with gray.

That's how I understand it as well.

The older models offer higher magnification as well. Not sure what magnification the new models offer.

EDIT: Just noticed you posted the link to SAKWiki.

Some years ago, the magnifier (grey housing) was one of the more frequently used tools on my Swisschamp. As a photographer, I used it lots to examine negatives and slides and I know it well as a good 8X optic. I haven't looked at the newer ones, but just on the basis that among them it has highest magnification and made of scratch resistant glass, I would recommend a SAK with that version magnifier, if you can find one.

I've done the same thing and that 8X worked well on a ground glass too. When carrying my Pioneer I paired it with a B & L 10X Hastings Triplet around my neck.

The gray one is more robust as well..IMO.
