Long story short I took mine apart to remove the finish, and noticed the grease was full of all kinds of gunk. So what should I use to replace it? Tried just oil and its not as smooth. What is recommended?

clich I used that sentry solutions stuff (tuff cloth or tuff glide), seems to work pretty well on my 551.

For me lubrication on a knife depends on the mechanism and type of knife. For OTF autos I prefer Tuf glide. For Flipper folders I prefer a good Grease and for balisongs with washers I like a graphite impregnated oil. I think Grease is the most smooth. Now remember that the reason the grease turns black is due to the microscopic pieces of metal that are wearing away on the knife. Some of it is dirt but alot of that black color is the metal powder. Also I like grease for Assisted openers because it can be used to silence a loose torsion bar.

PURPLE, do you mind sharing what kind of grease you have used and what your thoughts on them are? Is it a food safe grease? I've been thinking of ordering a small tube of that CRK grease, but if there is an alternative i can possibly get locally that would be awesome.

Rig grease, its thick, but if you put it on thin enough, its pretty slick.

I personally think that lithium grease is the just about as good as it can get, but use very, very little of it.

Just some random image of teh interwebz.

It comes in a spray can, or in a tube, the tube is much easier to use.

Sweet thanks Moose.

They make lube for a engine, lube for a axle, and lube for a knife, so why not use the right product for the application?

Lithium grease in my experience was never a good experience. It typically caused a slowing of the action or a gummy feeling along with attracting all the dirt and pocket lint it could. A dry lube has been noted to work well though application tends to be difficult. As for a grease I know CRK has theirs and it is also well regarded but I have no experience with it.

Several years ago I had a similar question and after my own trial and error decided to buy a knife lube. I purchased a bottle of BM blue lube and have not had the need or want to buy anything else. Typically one small drop per side is all that's needed or you can flush with hot water then apply lube. I lube my knives every 6 months and every folder I sharpen and I'm still on the same bottle. Works great on door hinges too!

Buy a lube designed for the application and the results will be as they should.

I use a little Mobil one bearing grease on pretty much everything that needs grease:eek: (and is not going to be used on foods) and I have not had any problems with it on anything... actually I would go as far as saying it is an amazing grease for both knives and guns(my AR LOVES it in hot or cold weather) and even after having it for 4 or 5 years my $6 tub of it is still 99% full. Branding and labeling on lubes(gun specific, knife specific, etc) does not mean much to me but thats just my opinion and while I am no lubrication expert I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night.

I tend to use Militec products. I used to just use the oil but moved to their grease as well [had it since I use it on my firearms]. Now I don't know if this is allowable, but at times I find the grease too thick for my tastes, but the oil is too slick and doesn't allow the "butter" smooth feeling of using grease. So I actually combine the militec-1 grease and oil together [i do like a sorta 1:1 ratio, or just experiment until I find a suitable level for my taste on that knife]. And it has worked wonderfully for me. It doesn't run / have a lot of excess / don't need a lot, and even after a month it feels like the "dry slick" -ish and feels great. I use them on all my knives [sebenza/spydies/kershaws]. I cannot guarantee it for a flipper since I have been holding out for ZT/KAI's new releases this year. But that is the combo I have used for the past 2 years on my knives. I hope that helps

[and I tend to use tuf cloth on the blade itself. Some of the knives I may use militec oil + heat - but please remember to use a low heat source like lamp/hair dryer because if you use a lighter to activate its properties when heated, it can change the RC on the edge if I remember correctly - tbh I have stupidly done this, but it was on lower priced knives and they get used so the edges are always "recycled/sharpened" if you will]
