How many other tools can dig, chop, carve, hack, split and be used as a weapon if needed........to me the Cold Steel Shovel has to be one of the best survival items going especially for the price !

I gave mine a little more testing today. It will never replace an axe for chopping but it split some kindling down with ease today. I then used it to make a feather stick and it actually worked better than some of my knives. My final test was to see if I could carve notches with it for trap making etc and once again it passed the test with flying colours. Obviously it doesn't notch as well as a knife but for what it is it ain't too shabby at all !

The real test will come when the zombies attack !:D

Anyone else love their humble shovel ?

I think it's a must have item for $20. I use mine around the house as well since it cuts right through roots. Regular shovels are stopped cold by finger sized roots, but not the CS. Every truck should have one. Take care.

On my wish list. I have to pay for my custom coming a few weeks first. Maybe for xmas.

My shovel used to beat up the CS shovel in school and take its lunch money. :D

Seriously, though, I freaking LOVE shovels. I've got a few designs that I'd love to see in production that would give the CS a run for its money but there's no denying it's a great tool. Just wish those foot steps were turned forward. I want to get my paws on a Bully Tools "trunk shovel" to evaluate.

That's a mean shovel FortyTwoBlades!! :D I've been meaning to get a CS shovel for a couple of years, knives keep getting in the way, but I'll get one eventually! :)

I bought one and my father stole it. Last weekend my godfather came over to help me carry some 6 gallon glass wine vat's into the basement, saw my new shovel and after my father explained to him how great it is in the yard, he took it.

I'm going to buy myself a third. I use it more in the yard then anything. It's great for car camping as well, but I don't bring it along with me on hikes, same as a hatchet. Just prefer a small saw and big knife for that.

I haven't gotten to play with mine yet but I do have one. One of the things I love about it is it can be used as a chopping tool but it doesn't weird out the pansies like a large knife/machete/hatchet.

Haha - I'm digging the passion! Nice shovel btw.

I see what you did there. :D

My other favorite shovel is a Bully Tools rice shovel. I wish someone made a compact version of one of those--better soil penetration than a square point and better root chopping ability than a round point.

Call a spade,,,,,, a spade

if you dig it; it is a spade
If you are moving stuff; it is a shovel, as in shovelling sh....t

There are short spades on the market, that you can sharpen
I carry in my car, an old WWII entrenching tool but with a wooden handle, ( no need for the metal headed bayonet fixing supplied handle)
Makes a great hand held 'trowel' or digging with the handle

I love these things. My local shop was out of stock on em for a while, so when they came in I bought two :D. One for the truck, one for the house. These are the ultimate fatwood hunting tools, you can chop, pry, poke, scrape, and dig with em. Definitley a cool and practical tool.

I have had the original Russian surplus one and a C. S. for years. The C.S. is better quality.Mine lives in my pickup with a 12" Ontario machete and a Silky Pocket Boy. I sharpened mine up all the way around.--KV

I might need to buy one as well..I have a full size spade shovel with a broken handle that works fine for my kayak camping..Makes a healthy pooper hole and covers up the fire when we leave..The CS shovel is way more tactical and since I'm a tactical type of guy..I need one...
CD

I was not familiar with the CS shovel until now, and it seems like a nice little item for the money.

OK...this nonsense has got to stop.
You are an evil man.
I just ordered a Trunk Shovel, Mortar Hoe and Garden Trowel from Hometown USA Stores.
The Garden trowel looks pretty sweet...for $10...I figure it's worth a try.

The stock images of their trowels worry me in terms of the hole at the tip. If they moved it further down the blade I think it would be better, but I guess you'll be able to see the hole placement in person and let us know! :D

What a comedian...depending on the size of the trowel, there may not be enough length to torque the tip while digging.
I could grind a V into the tip for more aggressive scraping, maybe even sharpen the intersection for cutting small roots...it was 10bux...

Predator, like 42 Blades pics. I bend shovels every year except for this one.

Thanks Pit. I like it when someone gets past the prestige aspect and gives a nod to an inexpensive but functional piece of gear. Good show.

.........................Funny, before my gold status ran out my spell checker didn't work and I was timed out fairly quickly. Not much changed with the status ending, but at least Spell Check works now, lol.
