Just started re-reading this classic Western. What a great book. I forgot how much knife content is in there. The writer must be a knife nut. In fact, at the end of the last book in the series (LD is the third of four), the Woodrow Call character ends up as an old man who sharpens peoples' knives for his living.

Any other LD fans out there?

Great book. Also a darn good miniseries several years ago (Maybe around 1988-89). LD is my favorite of Larry McMurtry's books, but he's written a ton of good stuff.

Larry McMurtry is a fine writer, and Lonesome Dove is his best work (in my view). I haven't read it in years, but this thread prompted me to move it to this summer's 'must-read-again' list. Gus' character was hilarious. I'll enjoy revisiting him and the Hat Creek gang.

Never knew LD was part of a series, have to check that out. Never saw the mini series (on purpose), but read the book so long ago I could do a re-read. Loved the book BTW.

I taped the miniseries and have to watch it about every 5-6 months.

Superb casting .....AND...... the closest match to the book of any series I have ever seen.

BOTH are superb.

:)

Interesting and believable story, believable characters, great attention to detail , that makes a winner every time !!

i taped it when the series was on TV, got the CDs last week(on sale $12) and watched it for the first time in several yrs, really enjoyed it, great movie and great book too.

did ya ever notice calls horse the hell bitch was a gelding by the end of the movie lol?

Great book and decent movie.

I like the Quigley Down Under book and movie also. Same idea.

I'm now re-reading "Comanche Moon" a prequel to Lonesome Dove.

Lotsa gory knife stuff there too.

It's when Gus and Woodrow...became.... Captains in the Rangers.

:)
