I am not a knife maker and do not have a machinist background, so I wouldn't know my way around a knife maker's shop to save my life. In fact, I'm sure I'd injure myself if I actually tried to use any of the equipment. But even so, as a knife enthusiast, I've always wanted to learn more about how knives are made. So I bought and recently watched the following 3 DVDs:

"Making a Sub-hilt Fighter with Steven R. Johnson"
"The Hollow Ground Hunter with Gene Osborn"
"Basic Bladesmithing with Ed Caffrey, ABS Mastersmith"

It was entertaining and highly educational to watch these DVDs. They go over every detail and every piece of equipment in their shop as they make a knife from start to finish. The DVDs run about 2 hours each, and they were obviously made on a low budget back in the 90's; they are not the most polished productions in the world. But that said, I can now say that I appreciate my custom knives that much more now that I have watched these movies and seen what it takes to make one. And I am now looking at some of my custom knives with a more critical eye, as I realize that some fit-and-finish issues could have been resolved in the shop with just a little more time/effort on the part of the maker. I also realize that the hours that go into making a custom knife don't seem to be fair when one considers the low price that most maker's charge for the finished product. In short, watching these movies has opened my eyes and given me a new appreciation for custom knives.
