Hey all,

I have been using GEC's for about a month now I guess. I was super happy with a 54 big jack. I picked up over ten of them all with great FF and all around nice knives. A friend sent me a 73 Blood Red Bone. I carried it for sentimental reasons. I have a few quick pics to go with a brief overview of my impressions.

Here it is

It came with a very good edge from the factory that would shave hair and cut paper very well. Nice and even. I have only honed it on my black hard arkansas stone and it is SHARP!

It has a little low spot from the factory in the edge but over use and sharpening that will work out. I am not wasting steel. I used it to carve seasoned black locust. It held up incredible and the belly to tip is great for more detailed work. Of course it is not awesome for whittling but it will work in a pinch if you are bored. I carved a cross for a necklace with it out of the black locsut.

More impressions of this is it is such a solid knife in such a compact size. It fits my hand very well and is natural to use. It has a lot of blade length for the closed length. A really great knife. I have already used the heck out of it and I have to say what a perfect EDC.

The knife feels SO SOLID for the weight.

Another thing I notice about this knife is that the tang is flush with the bolsters when closed.

This to me is great for a knife that will be used in dirty conditions. There is really no place for dirt or wood to get jammed up.

It also makes it incredibly easy to keep clean. When it is opened to the half stop it is also flush. Making again for easy cleaning.

I was thinking I would update this thread over time. I have seen a few threads like that and really enjoy them. So far I have used it to carve, open packages, prepare food and it has been a great performer and the incredible thin blade profile is a super slicer.

I hope this small overview is of some help to anyone looking.

Hey Kevin...great photo's, and a darn nice looking knife you have there, how do you rate the pull? some of the gec's can be a lot of work....sometimes too much.

Duncan,

Actually all of the GEC's I own aside from a whittler pattern have strong backsprings. I love the tension. I actually have two more identical blood reds that have pretty strong pull. This one though came to me and made me finally understand what a nail-beaker is. It was so tight I didn't break my thumbnail but about a mm in it gave me a blue bruise on the nail bed. Gone the next day, but either way, my man hands were finally humbled. I ran it through some clean up and break in and finally put some Nyogel 760g grease in the joint and it is smooth as butter! I love it.

But the short answer, moderate to strong pull once broken in. Just the way I like them :)

The only problem I have with my GEC #73 with burnt stag is that it tends to kill my desire to get any other knife because I like it so much. :D Yes, I'm serious. I love sturdy single-bladed knives that fill my hand, but that are not so bulky that they feel like they are filling my pocket too. The #73 is just right. I bought mine used and generally do not buy or keep multiples of the same brand and pattern, but I am considering getting at least one more just to have in the unlikely event that I should wear out my first one.

Chris, I couldn't agree more

This little addiction to GEC is the first time I have bought multiples. Only for certain models, but I just see unique handles on the same model and want them!

:)

From what I'm seeing, Great Eastern Cutlery makes very fine looking knives. ;)

Loevly bit of bone on a terrific little knife :)

Trousered a GEC Moose this am :)

Nice knife! I've never seen a single spring #73 from some of those angles before. I really like how thin it is.

Great pics Kevin. I picked up one of these in Cherry (in the mail now) after seeing your pics.

Thanks for the comments guys. I can't wait to see the cherry 73. I am glad I was able to help some out :)

I was thinking I forgot to mention one thing I find very notable about this knife. While I have a small variety of GEC's now, all with centered blades, this one is no exception. Here is a cell pic of my user 73

It is the best I could get, it is perfectly centered the whole blade.

I am not saying this is what you will get, but I always deal with vendors that will check before hand and save us both any hassles :)

The three blood red 73's I have are spot on. Also, NO blade play.

Thanks again.

Good eye. That's why I said quick pics. I took them in terrible lighting with yellow all around reflecting. I just. Removed the yellow from the photo.
