Is there any difference between GEC, Northfield, and Tidioute other than stamps and etching? There doesn't seem to be a differnece in price point as far as I can tell. Is there a f/f difference, or is the difference purely stamps and etching?

For those wondering, I bought a serialized pair of Northfield #73 burnt stag w/ end cap knives for fathers' day. Pics to follow when they show up. I'm having "his" knife sent to me so I can sharpen it if it needs it before it is on its way to Texas.

GEC knives are 440c
Northfield knives get the premium handles

other than that, it is just the etching.

I think most of if not all of the Tidioute are 1095.

If it's like mine you want even have to touch it up.

Not all GECs are 440C, many are also availble in Carbon Steel.

Derrick meant the Great Eastern branded models; all Great Eastern branded ARE stainless. Those marked Cyclops Steel Works are 440C, there are some not marked that way that are 420HC.

Northfield and Tidioute branded models are 1095 carbon with the Northfield's being a little fancier generally (swedges, pinched or threaded bolsters, etc).

Sorry I should have been more clear--

three brands--all consistent in their use of steel and all made by Great Eastern

GEC--440c
Northfield--1095
Tidioute--1095

:)

Northfields with the UNXLD shield are carbon, they come in a green&white tube(much nicer touch than a box!)

TIDIOUTE with either a long shield with the name stamped or a 'corset' shaped shield are carbon as well. They too come in the green&white tube

Great Eastern with a blade etch of squirrel&oak-leaves acorns and acorn shield are stainless 440.Their tube is white with a yellow&red label with the squirrels&acorns

Great Eastern Cutlery is the general name with the 3 brands within the company. Northfield has a tangstamp with TITUSVILLE IRON WORKS with pattern No.and year 07,08,09 at the end of this. Tidioute has TIDIOUTE and full year in arabic. Great Eastern stainless carries the very charismatic stamp CYCLOPS STEEL WORKS.

All have square end construction I think, except the long bolster/double Barlow type Jack which cannot for obvious reasons.

Thanks for the information. I think it is clearer now. Looking forward to my dad's and my Northfield knives to arrive.
