Great Eastern is making knives with 3 different brand names: GEC, Northfield and Tidioute. are these 3 separate lines that will be continued and if so what characteristics differentiate each line ? are all of equal quality, or is one line the top end ? am i the only one who is bumfuzzled by this ?

From what I can gather, having only been around this world a short time, the American commercial knife world is highly incestuous. For instance, Queen produces knives under several different names, produces knives for other companies, and other companies produce knives for Queen. Names get bought and sold, sometimes overseas, and yes, it can be very difficult keeping track of who makes what and where it's made.

I think the GEC brands are just an extension of that. They owned (or bought) the names to a few old US brands, and are now producing knives under those names, likely in the patterns that were originally made by those companies.

The GEC's are 440C stainless, the Northfields and Tidioutes are 1095. Different shields and tang stamps also differentiate them.

I have been carrying my Northfields model 73 (3 3/4") in Herringbone with me to work lately and I must say that it sure does carry well and is very eye catching coming out of the pocket.

Sunburst, I have one of those also, the Herringbone is definately more eye catching than some other scale patterns offered today in general.

What I am wondering about is the "hammer tested" & "frozen forged" advertised on the packageing.
Can anyone enlighten me on just what these terms mean??

As I understand it Great Eastern Cutlery is a new start up company located in TITUSVILLE, PA by Bill Howard (President) and Kenneth R. Daniels (Vice President). Bill Howard I hear is formerly from Queen. Tidioute Cutlery was a defunct cutlery company, I guess GEC has purchased the right to use the name. I suspect the same for Northfield but I cannot say for sure.

As I hear it, GEC is a new kid on the block owned By Bill Howard and Kenneth Daniels.
