Great Eastern Scout vs Pioneer?

I already have a pioneer, which I love, but it's a bit much to be opened and used around the "general public." I'm considering the Scout, but need to know if it's really a shortened pioneer--with same thickness blades (which is what I want). Would someone with both please let me know?

Thanks and regards.

I have several examples of both the Pioneer and Scout GEC's. The Scout is much more acceptable for "public use", and is actually the nicer of the two patterns, having better proportions, IMO. I believe that everything is the same thickness on the Scout vs. the Pioneer- same scales, liners, blades etc. It's just the more compact/ shorter version. The Scout is a wonderful, wonderful pattern. I have 5 of them, I believe- and I actually just ordered another.

I have the Brimstone Bone single bladed model, the river green bone, black micarta, caramel micarta, and white casein versions already, with the "green tea" bone version on order.

The No.73 Liner Lock version that I have in stag is an excellent knife and well big enough for general use in my experience.

Can't QUITE understand why GEC named this a Scout knife? I tend to associate that with a multi blade pattern like CASE, Remington or RR offer. Their Scout is a 1 or 2 bladed knife, odd...

The GEC #73 is a very close relative to the vintage Remington 1173 pattern- minus the infamous, crack-inducing lanyard hole. Likewise, the #23 is very similar to the Remington 1123. The GEC's are probably every bit as good as the old Remingtons, but don't cost thousands of dollars.

I have no idea why GEC chose to name the pattern a "scout". The name already has a fairly well-established meaning. They must like to give uber-traditional guys fits.

i think "scout" like the swift but stealthy guy who scouts ahead of the hunting party to locate the game. travel light but with a truly capable knife.
does that fit ?

That's make sense. The larger one is called the "Pioneer" so "Scout" in that old timey context fits well.

Any photos of both knives in your hand so I can decide which size to order.

Thanks

I have a pumpkin bone #23 Pioneer, and it is pretty much the same size as a Buck 110.

I've been carrying mine in a LM Surge pouch together with a Vic Spirit multitool.

I am a huge fan of the Scout. As mentioned above, the single blade is very public friendly AND it is pocket friendly.

Go for it!
