Great Edge; Inexpensive Knife

Many good things have been said in the past about the KaBar Dozier Knives in AUS 8A Steel. They can generally be had for under $ 20. I picked one up about a year ago and at the time reprofiled it and was pretty underwhelmed as it didn't seem to hold an edge. Because of my inexperience at sharpening at the time, I had left a slight burr.

I went at it again and this time used the Sharpmaker UF stones at the end with at an angle slightly greater than the 30 degrees that I had put the edge on. Very light and then a leather strop. This knife became the sharpest in my collection of mostly $ 100 knives.

Because it was "inexpensive" I pitched it in a drawer and redicovered it a couple of weeks ago. This is the knife that "pops hairs". I decided to see how well it would hold an edge, not expecting much from a $ 20 knife.

I just cut up (about 40 to 50 slices) of double corrugated boxes (hold 4 of the big bottles of Tide Liquid....very heavy boxes). This damn knife is still "hair poppin' sharp".

I have to believe that this must be one of the best knife deals out there. Nothing fancy, but neither are the 3 to 5 times the price Spydercos I have.

I second that... My only complaint is that I have wide palms and the handle seems thin for my fat hand. Still, that only drops it to a 9/10 rating (and I've rated knives that cost 3x as much lower!).

If a version was released with even a marginally better (more ergonomic) grip, it would be as close to perfect an EDC as any I've seen, bar none.

I've got the drop point and the only thing I dont' like about it: I routinely grab it and leave my more expensive knives behind. It's blade design and handle ergos work fine for me, and I love how it carries.

I just feel like a dolt sometimes with those other pretty, pricey and "better quality" knives staying at home while I carry my $20 favorite.
