Great field sharpener!

Hello all! Field sharpening has always been a real pain for me. I've never really found anything that I was happy with. Part of the problem is that I sharpen all of my knives with an EdgePro Apex and I'm spoilt. Whenever they start to get a little dull I just whip out a ceramic steel, give it a couple of swipes and head back to work. Then a thought came to me, "What about using a ceramic steel in the field?" The problem that immeadiately came to mind was that the rod stood a good chance of breaking while in my back (crushed against something is the most likely possibility). I spoke to Ben Dale (the maker of EdgePro sharpeners) and he came up with a novel idea-a 700 grit 8" ceramic rod housed in a brass cylinder locked in place (both in and out) with a bearing. I now have a portable ceramic steel that isn't going to get broken in my pack. A brilliant idea! I've been using it all week and it works perfectly. Now this was a one-off modification of an existing design, so unfortunately thats it.

Really?
I've been looking for a steel exactly like that I thought it would be a great idea years ago. So many companies make diamond steels like that but not ceramic. How much did it run you?

$20 US, well worth it in my opinion. Ben even puts a thick plastic sleeve over the brass so it's extra protected and you don't have to worry about corrosion. I'm serious, for me it's the best field sharpener I've seen and I've tried just about all of them.

Johan,

Why do you prefer it over the many diamond pocket "steels" that are out there?

Hoodoo-I've never ever like the diamond sharpeners (steels, folding, otherwise). It's difficult for me to describe it, it just doesn't "feel" right. With a ceramic, I always seem to get a better edge with less trouble. Maybe I can feel the ceramic cutting more than I can feel the diamonds cutting. I don't really know.

Now from a technical standpoint, I was once told that diamond hones aren't designed for the type of steel used in cutlerly (they're designed for machine steels) and won't really sharpen as well as other materails. I don't know if that's the case or not, but I do know that I prerfer ceramics over diamond hones.

Cliff-Yeah I phrased that badly didn't I. I was reffering to the types and grades of steel used in industrial applications-dies, and the like. Again, this is only what I was told, it could be wrong. I don't want to start an argument over it.

Whoa! Got to put a hold on all of this. I just got an email from the Ben Dale and he informed me that after consideration the field sharpener he made for me was more trouble than worth. It was done more as a favour to me than anything else. As such, he is not accepting any orders for the brass tubed field sharpener. Sorry if I've caused a muck.

Aw man wht a bummer I was really looking forward to it. Hoodoo, I like ceramic over diamond because I like a "smooth" edge over the "toothy" type edge, just a personal perference
