Great Gelbu Special by Sanu arrived

I got the Gelbu Special by Sanu today, a blem, according to Uncle Bill, justifiably so, I suppose, since the handle threatens to crack, and the scabbard is patched. But the handle is large and a perfect shape, allowing a range of grips, including a hand and a half, and the scabbard fits the GS perfect.

Of my four khukuris, I now have two blems (WWII and GS) and the UBE all by Sanu, the other an anonymous 15" AK. I'll look for more blades by Sanu. I just don't see how anybody could do better by my three Sanu khukuris. Maybe Bura is better. Hard to believe.

Perfect symmetry, including the fullers, hardness just right all along the blade. Balanced for a good hand, reaching forward a little aggressive but completely under control. No weakness, no bluff, no posturing, just solid.

Guess you can tell I like this knife.

Thanks, Uncle Bill, and a tip of the hat to Sanu.

Chris

BTW, I wouldn't mind a bit having Sanu try his hand at one of those thin blades for me. Is that idea still in the works?

I know what you mean. I only own two khuks - one unmarked 18" AK, and one unmarked GS (*believed* to be by Sanu), but the "Sanu" GS is perfect. Light, strong and fast. Very impressive. I look forward to seeing other blades by Sanu, to see how they compare....

Thanks, Chris, for report from the field. Always the best kind.

Sanu does very good work. He and Kumar are about equal in ability but Sanu doesn't hurry as much as Kumar and this shows. We are in the process of getting Kumar and others who want to work fast and get more pay slowed down using a bonus for exceptional quality as a motivation.

But nobody is better than Bura. He does consistently excellent work and almost never misses what he is shooting for.

Excellent. Nobody admires Kumar's work more than me (I own 4 khuks made by him) but little points like sloppy woodwork, scale inclusions and cracked karda & chakma blades can be annoying. I'll put up with them because the khukuri itself is always a first-class working tool, but it'd be nice if they weren't there!

And (IMHO) it's always better to motivate excellence than punish shortcomings. Way to go, Bill.
