I picked up one of my old songbooks from1902 and it opened to a song, set to music by Mozart, called "The Blacksmith". I think somewhere I have a turn of the century (1910 or so) recording disc of that song by Reinald Werrenrath. It is not the same as Longfellow's poem, but the theme is the similar - The Blacksmith is strong, hardworking, honest, his heart is true and mellow, he stands for what is right, ... and, of course, he is handsome.
