Great series of jungle survival photos

I'm going to have the chance to try this bamboo fire lighting technique this weekend. We are heading out to our camp facility for Carnival. There's loads of bamboo out there, green, brown and otherwise.

I'm also testing my knves on various tropical test media. I just finished with the "opening green coconuts" phase. This week I'm going to work over a grove of bamboo and some palm leaves if I get the chance.

You really can't beat Brazil for a wilderness survival nut. Mac

Those are pictures from Jungle Survival School at Clark Airbase, Philippines. It's gone now, but I remember when I was a kid, an instructor came to our school and gave a lecture to us about jungle survival :)

I tried the bamboo firelighting method in the photo this weekend. I was out at our camp facility where there is an abundance of bamboo.

I was able to make a coal on the second try! Just to prove that it wasn't luck I tried it again and got another coal.

I later tried again with another piece of bamboo and got smoked out three times in a row. I will promise one thing, if you use this method, wether you get a coal or not, you will no longer be cold!

As far as primitive methods go this one is pretty good. You have to select very dry, weathered bamboo to get results. I have some yellow bamboo in the trunk. I 'll try that on my day off this week and see what happens. Mac

Man, those bring back memories! The Negrito tribesmen really were great instructors. Clark was beautiful before the Pinatubo eruption.
