My 8 year old daughter will not throw anything out and as a result her room gets cluttered easily. To relieve some of the congestion I decided to build continuous shelves all around her room just above door level. My wife requested that the shelves be "floating" - in other words, without visible brackets or means of support.
After poking around the net for some ideas I came across this website http://www.rd.com/18214/article18214.html which uses hollow core doors as the shelving material.
The doors cost $18 at Lowe's and cutting them in half yields two 6 1/2 foot long shelves. That's pretty cheap. The process is fairly simple if you have access to a table saw. I added a strip of molding on the front edge to give it more of a finished look. Here's a couple pics:
I'd recommend this project to anyone looking to install cheap shelving around the home. All in all, a very satisfying project and the wife is happy too.
Cheers!
