One of the doctors who took care of me last week wanted me to do some knife work for him after I am allowed to play with sharp and pointy things again. He sent me a note, and this is his signature line:

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intent of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming ..." wow what a ride!".

That's a classic. It's been attributed to everyone from "anonymous" to James Dean... but no matter who said it first, it's pretty good. It's especially funny coming from a doctor. :D

My personal favorite is "I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence or insanity to anyone... but they've always worked for me," by Hunter S. Thompson. However, since I occasionally post in respectable areas, I don't use it any more.

Good line. Just be sure not to do like me when I was in highschool and try to skid broadside, used up, and worn out early into your grave. This was my truck following some not-too-bright decision making when I was 17:

Romanticizing an early death is so last century. The old saw "Live fast, die young, and leave a good looking corpse" has the same basic message as the one in the OP.

One of my favorites from the old saw pile is "Youth is wasted on the young." The fact that they do what they can to rush into the grave is proof of the validity of that statement.

Of course, we could turn the original post around. "Life is a race to the grave in which the winner is the last to arrive." But there's no real truth to that one either.

I do like the Hunter S Thompson line, though. Thanks for reminding us, James. ;)
