Today was the opener of Michigan's small game season. As usual, I was in the squirrel woods when the sun came up, and as usual, I brought home a couple of fox squirrels. I also enjoyed watching a couple of others scamper off as I walked out. Gone are the days when I felt the need to shoot a limit.

Knife content: I cleaned my pair with a new Queen Special Muskrat, and if there's a better knife for the job it must be good indeed. Anyone else out there like this knife--basically a trapper with the blades mounted at opposite ends--for small game?

Congrats on the squirrels in the pot. Very good eating. I have not had the pleasure of trying any Queens"limited funds" however I expect to one of these days. The knife that you used is one of the ones that I am considering for my first Queen purchase. Glad to hear that it works well.

i don't know anything about hunting...but.... you can eat squirrels??

also wondering, can you use their coat for anything?

Yes you can eat squirrels. The young ones are good fried and they all make good stew meat. I suppose you could tan their hides "coat" but I have never seen anyone do it.

Wonder I did not run into you in the Michigan woods, GRMike, as I was out there as well. And, like you, or because I am getting older, I feel no need to limit out every time out. I brought home a couple that first day.

Delicous for those of you that don't know! I put mine in the pressure cooker, twenty minutes is all it takes. Then add to stew, chili, or whatever else. Sometimes I mince up the meat, add some special ingredients and make a cold meat spread.

Squirrel Tails are worth saving. I send mine to Mepps where they are made into dressings for spinner lures. I like the thought of catching a small mouth bass on a lure that I contributed to.

By the way... I use Gerber Game shears to clean my small game. Please don't throw me out of the forum for that, but they work great.

I use a small slip for cleaning my squirrel as well. No style preference, just one with a narrow clip blade'll do. I used to carry a smaller fixed blade but they do too much damage and are not as easy to control on the small stuff.

Will be in the Ohio woods tomorrow if I can shake this dang cold I've been fighting.

I guess I'm still too young, shoot every one I see within my limit :)
