What is the toughest knife for the money? Blade has to be over 5" long.

I have to nominate the Fallkniven A1. For just a shade over $100, you can get a 1/4" slab of VG-10 stainless in a design that has been put through some serious survival tests. They may not be on the "legendary" tier shared exclusively by Busse and Strider, but they are probably as tough as Mad Dog, which cost as much as Busse and Strider blades. The hand-rolled convex edge of the A1 makes for one of the most durable edges available, too. This thing can chop through concrete (maybe).

I was going to sell mine since I just got the Busse Steel Heart-E, but I decided to keep it. It's nice having two bomb-proof survival/wilderness knives.

Go cheap import - you can buy large bolo class knives in 440A for ~ $10. They are 1/4" with shallow sabre flat grinds and thick edges. On a per dollar basis they are easily the strongest and overall most durable knives as they are really overbuilt. On a per dollar basis they will also compare very well in regards to cutting ability to the best knives of that design (heavy chopper).
