What makes a Randall Knife so great?

I know it is iconic, but what qualities make it such a terrific user?

I am in no way questioning its status; quite the contrary. I would just like to learn more about the knives. I am aware of some of the background of the brand, but would like to find out more about why it stands out in regular use.

My thanks.

Like I said in the other thread, use one. Seriously. I got my Randall 18 and it was beautiful, but I didn't know how beautiful until I put it to use.

Don't listen to these guys that whine and moan about the blade steels or any of that crap, their "junk" stainless on my knife is superb, it performs up there with any of the more modern steels.

ETA some of the good things about the knife: Construction, it's built like a brick shit house. You can tell whoever made it knew what they were doing. It's tough, you can beat on this thing with no problems. It takes a great edge and makes for a pretty decent carver. Which leads to one problem on my particular knife. Every bit of the edge is sharp, if you're not used to double edged blades there is a painful learning curve. You also can't manipulate the blade as much, such as thumb here or there, press on here for obvious reasons.

Maybe someone with better writing ability will come along and speak up.

So great even stick chickens use em. :p

The reputation I think it mostly built on the military knives, and the many years and theatres they were in. It would be a tough task to break one in typical use, the #14 is a tank of a knife.

They are falling out of favor with me for users, but I do still love the fact that there is a "handmade" "production line" with American craftsmen working it. RMK's may be one of the last Handmade American anythings with a client base like theirs, even non knife people have probably heard of them.
