Greco folders... strength...toughness?????

I asked this question in the middle of another thread, with little response. I heard that Greco folders are super tough. Can anyone, with practical experience, offer opinions on Greco folders, as opposed to the extremely expensive "super knives" (Strider, et al)? Since I'll never have the extra dough to fork over for these cult knives, I'm wondering if I shouldn't buy one of John's folders at his current spectacular savings price?

Solid, no BS and with a lot of personality. I like mine (Falcon) a lot; don't think you can get better value for your money. Also Mr. Greco is a very nice person to deal with.

Greco knives are in my opinion the best value for the money period (especially since the prices have been reduced). I bet you will not find another knife as strong as a Greco without spending alot more money.

I don't know if he still has them, but John used to offer tool kits and micarta scales for his folders. The tool kits come with all of the parts to repair your knife if you should ever need to.

It's already been said, but John is truly a great guy to deal with. I sent him a knife I got in a trade that had been damaged (previous owner tried to install a pocket clip and screwed up) and John fixed it and didn't charge me. :)

I have just gotten a Whisper Folder. It is not a high tec, space age materials, fine handiwork kind of knife. Instead it is a simply built knife that looks like it will handle all your ordinary daily cutting chores with no trouble at all. Also a bit too big and heavy for EDC carrying but comes with a cordura belt pouch. Not stainless though Mr. Greco coats the blade with a varnish. A very good value now but you better act fast, Mr. Greco is already out of some models. I have absolutely no regrets and would recommend.

I have a Raptor and a Falcon, the hawksbill and the droppoint. They are the toughest folders available, period. When that framelock jams open, the knife is a fixed blade. If you ever need a beater that won't snap, fold up, or rot out on you, go for one of these. It's a demolition-grade knife.

I got his hatchet, too. Spent a couple of days hacking up knotty old thorn bushes and it still shaved hair off my arm.

I have to agree with all the comments above!

My Greco Falcon is the only folder I have which makes the blade steel on my Spyderco Lil' Temperance seem thin ;)

I bought mine from John Greco at a show in Novi, Michigan. He said he was more concerned with making a folder that wouldn't break than making one which was easy to open and close. It isn't one of the slick, highly engineered folders that a number of manufacturers produce, but it is built like a tank!!! I can't imagine anyone breaking a Greco folder - without using a hammer on it.

Greco folders and fixed blades are about the best value-for-money knives in the industry.

They are truly solid and history will later record that they are collector's items from the beginning.

It has never been said enough - John's knives are great. They reflect his character.

I have one of his Dangler Drop Points and ordered one for my sister, that is how much I think of them. GET ONE WHILE YOU STILL CAN.

My Grecos:

Raptor
Grifon
Fox Fighter Saxon
MST
Whisper Drop Point
FPC

Tough? Try opening a Greco folder with one hand!

If I put the Grecos on the ground and drove over them with a front-end loader - I'd worry about damaging the loader.

Love 'em all!

I have the Falcon, and it's definitely a two-hand folder, but once it's open, it's almost as solid as a fixed blade. I got mine for $50 back when they had a special about 2 years ago. Get'em while you still can.

I have aFalcon,Raptor & Whisper,I have no tbl. opening them,if it's that tough to open, take it apart & tweak it a little! His folders are TANKS.love mine!

I have had a Falcon folder since before Christmas. Liked it so much I purchased a 5" fixed knife from John. The folder is stronger than any production knife I have seen, and this from someone who is not fond of liner/frame lock knives. The blade is about .200" thick and the scales/liners are .075" each. All made from the same 8670 hardened steel. I do not find them heavy for their intended use, but be for-warned, these knives are not intended as tomato slicers. While they will certainly cut tomotoes the edge profile is very thick. They are designed to be able to cut any reasonble material in front of them and as such, it is more difficult to make thin slices as you would with a very thinnly ground Loveless, but unless you REALLY abuse the edge, it will hold up. If I could only have one folding knife to do anything and everything, it would be my Greco, and I have well over 90 knives to chose from. John Greco and his knives have my highest recommendation for a simple, tough knife.

Sorry, forgot to add that his newer models are not at all hard to open or close. As I said above, I have only had mine for several months, but I can open and close it easily with one hand, and I am not a large or strong person by any means.
