Greco knives and 8670 steel: opinions wanted!

Greco has used 8670 for only quite short while. Thus most new Greco knives haven't seen enough use that users could have anything to share. This is my guess anyway.

so far this steel has proven to hold up great, the blade is not only flexable but can hold a decent edge. Its a unicqe steel and is not very simular to any of the steels that you can find on most steel charts...i can't seem to find it again but the steel does work good.

For the $$ they (the knives and the steel) can't be beat. I've have a few styles in the 8670, they proven to be very good.

From the Greco web page..

"The 8670 steel is a chrome/nickel alloy carbon steel from Germany. The contents are .71 - 1 % nickel, .3 - .5% chrome and .75% carbon. The RC on the edge is 58, and the spine is almost dead soft to provide flexibility. We find the steel easier to sharpen, and it holds an edge longer. That is one of the reasons John switched from 5160 and A2."

Just my opinion, but I think these are a whole handful of good steel, especially at the current sale price. Not art objects, mind you, but good tough blades with character.

I have one of the Greco folders and I will say that I like it and like all the others it would be hard to find a tough knife that could compare for anywhere near the price.
My only compaint is that it didn't come with a pocket clip and I refuse to use a belt sheath and just let it flop in the pocket (not really good loose in the pocket) so it doesn't see the carry time that it should.

I've got two of the folders, the Raptor hawksbill and the Falcon drop point. They are great little beaters in the woods, practically indestructible hacking at any wood or digging in the dirt -- especially that wicked hawksbill.

I don't mind them missing a clip because it makes that flat handle very comfortable for me to grab tightly. In fact, I took the thumbstud off the Falcon, to make it even sleeker. I drop one into my pocket and don't worry about it.

They're easy to sharpen as far as restoring a clean cutting edge, but I am still working, slowly and patiently, on thinning the edge.

Hi,

I have 4 Greco's now, thanks to the sales at www.cqcknives.com. :)
The Falcon is my new EDC; retired my BM Pinnacle.

The steel will stain, it is HC. The edges are thick but I have reduced them to about 35 deg. included and they are more than adequate for the city. They slice well.

They sharpen easily, but I use an EdgePro Apex and/or a belt sander, so if you are using a Spyderco204 you have some work ahead of you if you want to thin the edge. No problem keeping them razor sharp with a smooth steel and green charged strop.(www.handamerican.com)

I have been carrying a Falcon folder for 4 months and love it. Note that it is not as finished or smooth as your average Benchmade or SOG, so flicking it is not (so far) a viable option. It is a simple but tough knife. Tight though! :)

I'm happy but of course YMMV.

I find that the 8670 takes an edge that seems to have a burr, but it's sharp enough to shave hair. I've use it to take a couple of blows to a particle board (I think it's more like some strange "laminate" where two boards are glued with a browner board)
It digs in, and it comes out with no damage on the edge AND coating, which is kind of surprising to me. Cold Steel SRK definately show coating wear after I've done the same to the same board.
I think it's a good carbon steel (haven't seriously test it, a friend of mine will do the dirty work next weekend) and definately for the price, they're great pieces.
