Does anyone have any thoughts on John Greco knives, my son is leaving for the Army (101st airborne) Thursday. I would like to get him a good combat knife/sheath that is jump approved. I have heard that Greco made some knives for the 101st?

Any ideas?

Thank you

I bought several of John's blades when he had a special sale going about 3 years ago and gave my son his choice to take with him on his "govt. sponsored civilian sight-seeing tours" and he chose the MST...no complaints so far! However, he has no jump experience.....at least not yet.

If John doesn't have any due selling ,call BladeArt talk to Seth, they have a large supply of Greco Knives.
Be safe,
Jim

To answer your question in general, Greco's knives are simple, decently made and a great value. I have several and have owned a lot. They are too thick, for me personally, but I think it works out okay for the big knives. I have an MST Mark II, i think, and it's a cool knife. Great leather sheath, too. Probably any knife can be jump approved with a decent sheath, so find out what the criteria are and you may need to have someone make a custom Concealex sheath or something, but it's worth the $$$!

I thought the 101st Div. was now an "air assault" outfit, not a paratrooper outfit. (?????????????) I know the 82nd. Div. Abn., is a paratrooper outfit.

They just activated a "new" 101" airborne btl. inside the 101st air assult. there....i was with the 5th for about 3 years stationed there. Air Assualt has been there for a while.

Thanks everyone for your imput on Greco...I called John today...

After speaking to John Greco yesterday, I am getting him to help me make a knife for my son. It will be similar to the "whisper" he makes. The only difference will be that the new knife has a thicker (as in deeper blade) and the top edge will be sharpened approx. 3" from the tip. I will try to post a picture of it when I receive it.

Cool! Can't wait to see it! His leather sheaths are really nice, in my opinion, but you may want to think about sending the knife to Eric (On/Scene Tactical... BFC name is "Normark") for a custom Concealex sheath. Never hurts to have plastic when the knife is going to places that are hard on leather. He makes awesome sheaths and prices are right, too.

Greco knives=great value for the money. Just don't expect perfect grinds and fit and finish. For the money he charges, I don't even see how he provides a product this good.

Thanks for the info on the sheaths..... Yes, plastic would be better.

I am lucky that John lives in the same county as I do. I have never been to his shop however, but have a friend who has several times and collects all of Greco's works. I am looking foward to meeting him this week..

I was really interested in the opinion of the BFC people. The knowledge on this site is tremendous. Ya'll have been great.

As for the knives, he has them laser cut and he finishes them, I think....
And for the sheaths, a lady in here in town makes them....She does great custom leather work on just about anything, plus large orders,(like for Beretta for instance).

On the plains of hesitation lay the charred and blackened bones of the countless millions, who, at the dawn of victory, sat an rest, resting they died......

Thanks, Canemaker, for clearing that up. Nice to see that the famous "Screaming Eagles" are again "jumping."

The very best of luck to your son.

No problem, I ask my son the same question about the 101st....I'm also glad it's back.
I tried to send you a message, but was blocked, my dad lives in Salmon, I lived and worked in Jerome for the SO for two years...Still vist Salmon ever year....Good to chat with you...

Sorry gentlemen, but as someone who is currently assigned to the 101st and intimately familiar with the makeup of the division I can tell you that there is no such animal as an airborne battalion in the 101st. There has been some major restructuring of the division's make-up, but unless you count some very small units, no-one is on status and will not be.

Canemaker, If someone told your son he was going to an airborne battalion in the 101st, they lied to him.

Regards

Pete

Pete,

I was informed by my son's recruiter two days before he left for Benning and OSUT....Having once been in the Army myself (for several years), I should of known better than to believe a recruiter..lol....His information seemed likely though, as he stated that by July of 05 a "new" Airborne unit was being activated there......which pleased me greatly, I might add, for I have fond memories of Ft. Campbell and one of the "smaller units" stationed there.

Thanks again Pete,

Jim Evans
