I have been eyeballin' some models, but never have handle any.Any thoughts on Greco's knives? / good/bad/otherwise.

I have black CT whisper.
Long, narrow and thick blade(over 5mm) slim yet comfortable handle.
To put it simple - pure breed fighter.
I've never used mine to cut anything, so I cannot say anything about utylity side of this knife :)

I have had three Greco knives over the years and was very happy with them. I had two tantos and one smaller 'worker-bee' knife, I think it was the Wasp or something like that.

My tanto's have gone the way of the Trade for other knives, but I held onto that little guy.

The knives were sharp, thick, the coating was pretty tuff, but there WAS rust on one of the tantos, and that particular knife never even went out doors!

The knives were not easy to sharpen, but the edges held up reasonably well. The handles were micarta and were GREAT! Comfortable, and pretty good when wet, which used to be important to me when I was up on the ladder installing camera's and antennas.

If you kind find 'em, GO for it. I think you'll like em!

I've got 2 and really like them, i have the baby whisper and the mst both of which i bought directly from mr greco. give him a call and i'm sure he'll fix you up, but be prepared to spend a little time on the phone cause he seems like a heck of a guy and quite easy to talk to. for the money you can't beat his knives.

I own 3 older knives. Very solid if you like heavy blades, they'll hold up to heavy use. His knives are very inexpensive compared to other handmades but he is well respected.

John was sick for a while and actually retired. Good thing he recovered and is back to knifemaking because his new knives are actually ground better than before.

While they aren't art knives, the designs are beautiful, either the classic styles or the purely functional utilities or fighters. Very strong knives, and his folders are the toughest available.

Hello,

I have owned a couple of John GRECO's knives. Some were made for Laci SZABO and one is a John's folder.

What i like in his work is that they are not artknives that you'll fear to use on duty or in fields. They are reliable knives, and I think the words "overbuilt knives" is good to describe them.

And at last, they are not too pricey.

take care,

Bob

I have had a Greco small axe for several years. Took it to the Ausse Outback and it performed very well. Rugged and very sharp!

Chains,

I just picked up an MST from a gentleman on this board. Fist impressions were that this is a thick hard blade, with decent ergonomics, that will become a basic carry for all outdoor use. It took some time to sharpen but was worth it.

A "top of the line" knife maker (not on this board) mentioned that the Greco's were worth looking at. This got me interested in them. I already have a couple more in mind.

great knives..good looking/feeling without being too pretty to use...[ carry a small dangler style on a regular basis ...

+1 for Greco knives. I have 3 different versions of the MST, and one smaller Greco-Lile piece. Though very robust, they are all great users.

I have a couple that I bought directly from him on eBay and I think they are just great. One of them is a small dropped point out of 51200 (?) that is thin flat ground and cuts like the Dickens!

Plus, he's a Kentucky boy!

I love mine.
The 9 inch Bowie is 13 ounces which is a good weight for what I want.

The gambler Bowie is great as an every day carry knife and a great deal for the money.

I like the belt stud sheaths.

Chains - Midnight Whisper? Which version is that?

Another thing - John is very helpful, I send him some questions in email, and got answer same day! That nice.

John Greco has made the Birmingham AGCA's three yearly gun shows for some time. I have bought a number of his fixed blade knives over the years. Some were one-offs, some were production. All were at show, or 'deal', prices - and real bargains. Reviewing his offerings on his website, I'd still pay that - or more - for any of them. He does first line quality work, producing knives that are users, not intended to set in a display case. The CS blade material he uses is well heat treated and ground, if not delivered particularly sharp. He figures everyone can finish honing their knives on their pants leg. A slight man, with lots of grey hair, he will talk to you... appreciative of good company, I suppose, because of his self described austere cabin life in Kentucky. I like John - and look forward to our talks. I was glad to see him return after his illness.

Yeah, buy a GRECO knife - they may not be beauty's - but they are well-designed users.

I have a few of John's knives,a couple Whispers,a Whisperer and a Green River Camp knife,though imo,it's a bit small to be called a camp knife,more like a skinner.
I've heard them described as having an industrial feel and wouldn't disagree with that.
All but one had edges I felt were too obtuse and the one that was pretty sharp, had been re-sharpened,I'm sure.
Nice sheaths,too.
Good knives at good prices,imo.

i have a greco recon, i cord wrapped the handles ala' strider, and the thing looks a lot like a strider with the thick blade, i really like mine.

i have had a couple other grecos too thru the yrs,

I concur with all of the above. Good inexpensive hard-use knives, not much to look at but they are made for work not for adornment.
