I was wondering which one I should surprise myself for Christmas. How easy is it to resharpen Carbon V or Carbon 8a? The ones in question are the Greco Companion MK II or Cold Steel SRK.I'm looking for a fixed blade,5-7in. and in the range of~$130 or less. These 2 fit the bill and if anyone has had previous experiences with these please let me know. Thanks Big John

Big John,

I would go with the Greco. Not only do you get a "custom" knife, but you get a damn near indestructible tool.
Greco uses A2 steel for his knives and IMHO it kicks much a$$ over Carbon V. He also uses micarta for his handle grips(Cold Steel uses Kraton rubber).
Greco's sheaths are eons ahead of Cold Steel's in quality and overall performance.
Lastly his prices are awesome.

My vote goes for Greco. No recounts necessary

Perhaps this will help you make your decision!

I got tired of the black micarta scales, so I put on some Koa that I bought from Tom Mayo.

Bigjohn,
If Greco is using A-2 than yes, yes, yes, but if he is using 5160,like he does on some models, than maybe it's a toss up, they'll all sharpen about the same, if the RC hardness is close, but I still think A-2 is alot tougher than the others in impact situations anyway, because of it's alloy.

I own two Greco 5" Companions. I love them. I abuse this edge, and the A2 has not had to be sharpened yet!!!

It really holds an edge. After I got the knives, I was so impressed with them, that I looked up John Greco's number, and gave him a call. A very nice guy. I asked him about the Rc values of his knives, and he says the edge is hardened to Rc58, the spine is Rc low fifties for flexibility, the tang is mid to high forties. These are very hard use knives[1/4" thick], and just keep on cutting!
If ya think of it, get two.

BIG JOHN,

I will also cast a vote for the Greco knife. A friend of mine has one and let me tell you, if you managed to break this knife, you are doing something seriously wrong. I doubt you could break it if you tried. The fit and finish was awesome and the handle ergos are perfect. For the money, Greco is hard to beat.

Big John...You can't go wrong with the Greco knives. I own three myself and I use them all regularly. They're definitely user knives! All three are made of 1/4" stock A2 and they're tough! If a fighter style blade tickles your fancy, check out Greco's new ads in the latest magazines. His new "Anthrax" fighter looks great. Just got off the phone with John Greco and here are the specs on the Anthrax: 6" blade, 12" OAL, 5" handle, double integral guards, 7/32" stock of 8670 steel, black micarta handle, and a kydex lined leather tactical sheath!

Summerland...love that 7" blade Companion-II! Did you rehandle the knife yourself? The Koa looks really nice!

Hey Chubbs, how do you contact Mr. Greco.I'd like to find out more info. about that "Anthrax" knife.Do you have any pics? How much $$$? Thanks Big John

Ahhh...Big John,

So, the Anthrax sounds intriguing huh? Well, John and Sherry Greco can be reached at (270)932-3335. Their place is in Kentucky. According to John, they're putting some new literature together, but it's not quite done yet. You can snag a sneak peak of the Anthrax model in their latest ads in the latest issues of Blades or Knives magazine. If you want to see some of the other Greco knives, check out BladeArt.com, they have plenty of pictures. Yeah, give John and Sherry a call, they're great folks and can fill you in on everything! Have a great one now!
